I'm planning to travel to Mexico. Do I need a passport?

As of March 1, 2010, all U.S. citizens – including children -- must present a valid passport, book or card, for travel beyond the border zone into the interior of Mexico. Entry by any means, for example by plane or car, is included in this requirement. U.S. citizens traveling as tourists beyond the border zone or entering Mexico by air must pay a fee to obtain a tourist card, also known as an FM-T, available from Mexican border crossing points, Mexican tourism offices, airports within the border zone and most airlines serving Mexico. Upon arrival in Mexico, business travelers must complete and submit a form (Form FM-N 30 days) authorizing the conduct of business, but not employment, for a 30-day period. Travelers entering Mexico for purposes other than tourism or business or for stays of longer than 180 days require a visa and must carry a valid U.S. passport. U.S. citizens planning to work or live in Mexico should apply for the appropriate Mexican visa.

Now, isn’t that interesting! We’re going to have to keep this handy.

I think someone should suggest to the Mexican President that we will require the same procedures/documents that Mexico requires of Americans in Mexico. In fact, I think we should tell him (the President of Mexico) we are going to arm our border patrols with exactly the same firepower their border guards have at their southern border.....

I think we should get as many as possible to publish these facts. Every time someone suggests it’s profiling, we need to just say it’s standard procedure and quote from the US Embassy website.

It was a horrible time for the family, happened about 30 years ago. My husbands uncle died of a heart attack and his body was tossed into a fish/ice house. The family had to pay off everyone (cash money) in the city government of Cozumel, from the mayor on down, before they would release his body to be shipped home.

That is only one of the bad experiences we have had in Mexico.

But for most part, Mexico is completely safe.

If you're Mexican, that's almost accurate.

If you're an American (or look like one) that is 100% BS!

Years ago I remember my father-in-law talking about how wonderful the beaches were. He said that the folks treated you like royalty and that EVERYTHING was pennies on the dollar.

Yes it used to be that way, but it was illusory. If you didn't know Spanish or were a movie star at megabucks resorts. But the seething resentment below the surface was evident only if you understood Mexican (Spanish+Indian slang.)

The stuff they remark about when they are unaware that you understand would curl your hair.

This has been particularly true in the last 10-15 years.

I used to go to border towns in and near AZ a lot, but I have not been there in years. It isn’t safe. I almost feel sorry for the Pharmacias that lost all the Senior Citizen trade.

Many peole I know have used the dentists in Mexico, just south of Yuma wondering if this has effected the dentists there. They do some good work.

We don't have to suggest a damned thing; Just do it!

Tom Clancy described the process many years ago : it's called Temporal Reciprocity. Just announce that starting on a certain date the requirements to enter the United States for any reason whatsoever will mirror exactly the Mexican requirements for Americans entering Mexico. If Mexico changes the requirements, the U.S. track the new rules without any additional action necessary on our part.

Same for residence and property ownership.
Mexico, then, would be totally responsible for how their citizens are treated in the US. They would literally create the rules and laws, and corresponding penalties for their violations..

I went to Mexico once a decade ago with the sort of pass you describe. I promised myself I would never visit another foreign country without a US Passport. These days, half-measures, like a “pass”, are as nothing compared to the official document that declares your identification and citizenship.

For anyone wondering: get the passport!
