Tancredo Says Arizona Law Goes Too Far Former Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO), who crusaded for tough anti-immigration measures while in Congress, told KDVR-TV that while he supported the new immigration law in Arizona he thought it went too far.

Said Tancredo: "I do not want people here, there in Arizona, pulled over because you look like should be pulled over."

Tancredo is so hated, I just *knew* he had to have been taken out of context.

Tancredo should work to pass it in Colorado. I liked him - past tense.

The fact remains that while I and nearly everyone else on this site support the intent of this law, there are also those of us who know that it will be thrown out in court for being in violation of existing civil rights law and legal precedent

It will be thrown out based on a perverted and tyrannical interpretation of the Consitution. Az is well within it's rights and any interference by the Federal Government is pure tyranny.

“It is not difficult to see which ‘illegals’ might be illegal. I passed one today. He was Hispanic, I’ll grant you, but it was on the expressway going 55 in a work van with all the other traffic going 60-70.. I’ve noticed a lot of similar people always driving per posted limits/rules”

Are you saying that by driving under the posted speed limit in a van the cops ahould have probable cause to make a stop and check for papers.

>Arizona has a problem and they have every right to act on it, especially when the FedGov won’t....

>But this is a SLIPPERY SLOPE here folks...if this interpretation of the law is indeed true. Stay vigilant, please!

The law ( http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/49leg/2r/bills/sb1070s.pdf ) we’re talking about has, as it’s very first section its intent, which reads:
The legislature finds that there is a compelling interest in the cooperative enforcement of federal immigration laws throughout all of Arizona. The legislature declares that the intent of this act is to make attrition through enforcement the public policy of all state and local government agencies in Arizona. The provisions of this act are intended to work together to discourage and deter the unlawful entry and presence of aliens and economic activity by persons unlawfully present in the United States.

If the ‘intent’ portion has any bearing at all, and it should, then I would say that it effectively negates the slippery slope you perceive.

I think the feds will push it.

There are way too many states now that are passing
laws that take back the power usurped by the federal government.

They can’t let this “get out of hand”.

Meh... Still looks like a bit too much “CYA/play both sides” maneuver.

By no means am I a legal genius, nor do I claim to have any training leading towards a law degree.

But I can read.

The bill gives no authority beyond what the current Federal legislation provides. It is still required for drivers to commit a civil traffic offense as already established, though there is a provision regarding human trafficking.

So nothing has really changed, except law enforcement has something to stand on when dealing with immigration issues now. “Sorry, have to ask... it’s the law.”

Wonder who is going to write the ‘perfect’ bill. Based on that, nothing will ever happen and the immigration mess will grow and grow and grow. That is, and has been, the situation.
