Jim DeMint Not Ruling Out Presidential Run
Weekly Standard ^ | April 22, 2010 | John McCormack

Posted on 04/22/2010 7:49:27 AM PDT by FTJM

In an interview with David Brody, Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina, a favorite of movement conservatives and Tea Partiers, doesn't rule out a 2012 presidential run. DeMint says the presidency is "not something I desire," adding that not really desiring the presidency is an essential requirement for the next president.

David Brody: “There are folks in the Tea Party movement that seriously want you to run for President. Would you consider something like that?”

Senator Jim DeMint: “You know, I’ve always thought of myself as an average guy and when I think of the President of the United States I’m hoping that there is some knight on a white horse that’s going to ride that I can look at and say you know this is Ronald Reagan character or the level that we could have. Frankly, the people that I’ve seen here in politics I realize that I can hold my ground with any of them. There are a lot of changes I’d like to make in this country and I think Americans are going to be ready for someone to tell them the truth next election. Not someone who will give them a good speech but someone who reminds them that the federal government has to do less not more. I’m hoping we can find that candidate out who has shown himself to be a great Governor or somewhere. It’s not something I desire. Anyone who really desires it does not know how much trouble we’re in as a country because we’ve got some tough times ahead of us and we need a President, who says we can get through it, we can come out better on the other side but we’re going to have to sacrifice.”

David Brody: “All right, so not ruling it out necessarily?”

Senator Jim DeMint: “Well I guess I’ve learned not to rule out anything in life but right now it’s the last thing I want to do.”

I think he’s got a lot of points that need to be made, and announcing for the presidency would be a way of getting them out there.

I'd need to learn more, but I'm open to DeMint. Every time I see his name he's doing something I agree with, which is a good start.

Jim DeMint can hold his own with anyone. He masters the material and articulates it well.

I have always wished for politicians who would ask the question, is this good for this country. He does that all the time.

I would be delighted with Jim DeMint as my presidental candidate.

First I’ll admit I’m not informed of Senator Jim DeMint’s record and views. If he’s a conservative I look forward to a contest between him and Sarah Palin. Maybe they could team up. Right now I don’t see anyone close to Palin (IMHO).

No more Senators, please.

We need a governor with a sober, solid record of conservative accomplishment — e.g., Mitch Daniels or Haley Barbour.

Good. I like DeMint a LOT. There was a report a few weeks ago that claimed he had foreclosed the idea of running. I’m glad that report was apparently premature.

DeMint has a 100% rating from the American Conservative Union. I have nothing against Sarah. Indeed I like and admire her. I just feel DeMint would be a stronger candidate.

DeMint is excluded because of McCain and Obama? Interesting logic...

As of today, DeMint/Palin is a dream ticket, and then I want R.Paul to tell all his bots to support them, too.

Watching DeMint take on the Regime over the Honduras episode told me what I needed to know about him.

And not wanting to be POTUS, particularly in the state we are currently in, is a grounded, humble approach that would serve us well.

“DeMint / Bachmann 2012”

I like Rep Bachmann, but I would prefer DeMint/Ryan 2012!

Rep. Ryan is smart as a whip & I liked how he wasn’t afraid to let Obama have it right to his face during the Health Care meetings.

Some pundit once said that governors make good presidents, legislators don't. And gave examples. That sticks in my mind to this day. Actually it makes sense.
