These two institutions apparently have an overabundance of money and no longer need alumni contributions.

Government unions must be banned. Civil servants are supposed to be just that, not bargaining members trying to turn the screws on taxpayers. Public servants should not be able to strike. If they don’t like the terms of their employment, they have the honorable option to quit. They should not have the right to withhold government services (via a strike or otherwise) from the public under any circumstances.

Interestingly enough, some of the same sources also gave money to McCain:

Goldman Sachs may have given $994,795 to Obama, but they also contributed $230,095 to McCain. Citigroup was $701,290 and $322,051. JP Morgan was $695,132 and $228,107. UBS AG (a Scottish bank?) gave $543,219 and $192,493. Morgan Stanley was $514,881 and $273,452.

The US Government may have given $494,820 to Obama, but they also gave $208,379 to McCain plus the US Army gave McCain $167,820 and the Defense Department gave him $144,105. This looks like McCain actually got $520,304 from the US Government when you count in the military.

I don't know what all that means, but it does look like the academic community was overwhelmingly for Obama (no Surprise).

I think they were hedging their bets. Were I a corporate head, I would donate something to each to stay on friendly terms. The amount would be proportional to the probability of their success.

Then I'd say I was just helping to keep democracy alive.

I hate to see IBM on the list as the company I work for was recently acquired by them. But looking at the big picture the company has almost 400,000 employees. So it doesn’t really take a large percentage of those employees to make contributions totaling a little over a half million dollars.
