Polish president dies in air crash
A plane carrying Lech Kaczynski, the Polish president, has crashed near Smolensk airport in western Russia, killing all on board, Russian officials have reported.
Polish officials confirmed on Saturday that Kaczynski was on board the flight with his wife, as well as Slawomir Skrzypek, the president of Poland's central bank, Andrzej Kremer, the deputy foreign minister and the army chief of staff.
The crash occurred about 1.5km from Smolensk airport in foggy conditions.
And they were on their way to the Katyn remembrance. Matt, my thoughts and prayers are with you... my grandfather grew up in Vilna. I’m sure you know that despite the U.S. government’s boorishness towards Poland, the American people *love Poland.

Stop hounding the man. Undoubtedly he's chilling at Camp David, pumping some iron and a few rounds of basketball. Also trying to find time to attend the chapel there
Poland has some of the best people and the worst luck of any nation around. Time to pray for them. A lot.
What a loss. May God comfort and help the dear and brave people of Poland, America’s ally and stout hearted friend.
I’m not a pilot, but I understand that there are signals that come from the airport that provide precise navigational information for the approach. Could these be faked, and cause a plane to think it’s safely on approach when it is actually being guided to a crash?
Dear God lizol, my prayers go out to all of Poland. Be on guard my friend for anything, the world is now a much darker place for us all.

This is such a terrible tragedy. Condolences to the people of Poland during this loss.
But I'll bet he's trying to learn to throw a baseball like an American kid does, and that he's trying to FIND the chapel at Camp David....

What a tragedy. So sad.
I just called Father and he did not know about it.He is putting the news on now.The parish that he is in is Polish.Too sad.
You are very gracious, thank you. This is devastating. My grandfather was born in Vilna. I do hope the Polish people know that despite the hostility towards their beautiful country from the current occupant of the White House, the American people are squarely on their side.

This almost happened on a flight that I was taking in Northern Italy. VERY dense fog. WE were on approach to the runway when, just as you could make out the tops of structures 10-20ft below the plane, it suddenly pulled up, climbed, and accelerated. We flew around for a few minutes before the pilot came on and said something about failure of the landing guidance system. We had to fly south to Genoa, refuel, and then head back north when the fog cleared. Pretty scary.
Prayers and tears for the victims, their families and the people of Poland.... words cannot say enough....
