Unwanted Adopted Boy Sent Back To Russia

A seven-year-old Russian boy who was adopted by an American woman has been sent home on his own with a note saying he was no longer wanted.

Young Artem Savelyev arrived at Moscow airport with the typed note from his adoptive mother which said he was being abandoned after only six months in her care.

Torry-Ann Hansen had admitted to having made a mistake and suggested the boy should be re-housed.

"I no longer wish to parent this child," the unmarried 27-year-old nurse from Tennessee wrote, requesting his adoption be annulled.

She accused the boy's Siberian orphanage of misleading her about Artem's behavioural problems.

Hansen had placed sweets, biscuits and colouring pens in the child's rucksack before checking him onto the 10-hour flight as an unaccompanied minor, reportedly telling him he was going on an "excursion" to Moscow.

Some nurse!

Oh, I’m tired of being a parent now—been there, done that. Time to quit playing with it.

Fry her!

Agree. None of us are guaranteed a perfect child, no matter how we aquire them!

This is what is wrong with single people adopting children, because it is the “hip”, Madonna, Angelina Jolie sort of thing to do. People adopt children the way most people adopt dogs, thinking that they will fill a void in their lifes...and kids do; but they are NOT dogs. They are full of their own feelings, wants and desires. Kids are needy and take all your time and efforts.

Her second paragraph refers to the safety of her family, but the story refers to her as a single mom. Which is it ?

Haven’t you seen Kate Gosselin? She is a nurse too. The most uncaring, hatefilled shrew that there ever was. She had her sick boys sleep on the hard laundry room floor, in case they vomited and messed up their bed!

Not all nurses care about other people.

Always the chance this is nothing but propaganda. Russia has been busy with that lately.

I imagine if we did a little asking around we would find this was not a big surprise to her friends.

I have some empathy for the woman, given the vast behavior problems some children from foreign orphanages have. But I just don’t know how you shove a kid onto a plane and say, “see ya, have a nice life.”

What unimaginable cruelty.

That pretty much sums it up. :-(

No kid should be placed anywhere but a stable, and normal, family setting.

Everything I’ve seen has her living with her mom (referred to as the boy’s grandmother).

Foreign adopters don’t receive the same state social benefits as domestic adopters.

The Russians lie grievously about the background and condition of children.

A child of age 6 can be very badly hurt and need extremely expensive care (can you say $150,000 a year or more?)

Nobody at the airlines raised any questions when they saw an unaccompanied 7 year old with a one-way ticket and a note pinned to his lapel?

the agency that facilitated this adoption to this unstable woman- should be OUT OF BUSINESS

I adopted from Russia and I can appreciate the acute behavior issues of an older adopted child- boy especially. RAD (if this is his problem, usually the extreme ones are) is living hell. But there are resources, there is legal adoption disruption and temp places that fostering these kids, there are parents waiting and willing to take on these tough emotionally injured kids, and this woman is not fit to adopt a goldfish, much less cope responsibly with this child's problems. Shame on her, and give her jail time for reckless endangerment.

My wife and I adopted our son in Russia a little more than 7 years ago.

How this mentally unstable, unmarried... “person”... could have made it through the interviews, back-ground checks and other personal investigations to which we were subject as part of the process of adopting a Russian-born child is beyond my ability to comprehend. A lot, and I mean a LOT, must have changed in their qualification process since 2002.

Adoptions are done 100% by CHOICE. Nobody MAKES you adopt a child. Why would she even go through with it in the first place if it meant no more to her than “I don’t want to parent this child any more”?

I can’t even think of an appropriate punishment for this woman. I am so angry I can barely see the screen as I type this... and, I am now officially at a loss for words on this one...

and I could not really blame the average Russian who learns about this from thinking that Americans must be the most horrible people on Earth. Way to win friends and influence people, stupid wench!

Thanks. I didn’t read that far, I guess. It’s just sad. Actually, for everyone.

The adoption of a Russian child can easily cost the parent(s) $25K and lots of time and red tape. The adoptive parents have certain expectations that the orphanages are well aware of, but lie about the children anyway. I can understand her not being able to deal with him after 6 months, but just putting a child with that many problems on a plane and shipping him back really is cruel.
