Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a potential presidential candidate in 2012, called Barack Obama on Thursday "the most radical president in American history" who oversees a "secular, socialist machine."
Gingrich reminded conservative activists why he was one of the nation's most polarizing leaders in the 1990s, opening the Southern Republican Leadership Conference with a biting assessment of Obama's policies.
"The most radical president in American history has now thrown down the gauntlet to the American people: 'I run a machine. I own Washington and there's nothing you can do about it,"' Gingrich said. He urged his fellow Republicans to stop what he called Obama's "secular, socialist machine.
Highly charged words, for sure. But that's standard fare at the three-day GOP gathering that is drawing several presidential hopefuls. Friday's headliner is former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

I guess Newt felt there were enough to provide cover for him to FINALLY state the obvious.
Testicles of solid Jello that one has...
And it took him HOW LONG to finally come out with this "bold" statement?
Then again, I suppose he could be "brillant", a coward, and a political opportunist all at the same time.
I too am terrified. Let them all go to Iowa and NH and duke it out. Snobbish conservatives can find a flaw in anyone. It doesn’t really matter who the 2012 candidate is and Newt is as good as any of them. The 2010 and 2012 will be the most important elections we’ve ever had - the difference between saving or exterminating the American Experiment. Those here denigrating a first stringer like Newt only help the subversive media, labor unions and democrats.
He was once trusted with the future of the entire party and he lost that trust. I won't trust him again.
Acceptance of very fundamental flaws is what got the GOP where it is today - rationalization, appeasement, equivocation - working with Democrats (Scozzafava, Pelosi, etc.). We either have ideals or we do not.
Yes, it does matter. And no, Newt is not.
Bingo. Great post.
Good analogy!
conservative activists reminded Gingrich why he should fuhgettaboutit .
Is this the Republican strategy for fighting the progressives' take down of the Republic? Compromise, enable, give in and do nothing to let the progressives take over everything. Then when we are on the verge of collapse and people see the reality of socialism from the edge of the cliff, ride in to save the day.
Just might work...
Careful now Newt ,,,, You’re gonna hurt Jimma Carta’s feelings .
