NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The number of Americans filing for unemployment insurance for the first time jumped last week, according to government data released Thursday. There were 460,000 initial jobless claims filed in the week ended April 3, up 18,000 from an upwardly revised 442,000 the previous week, according to the Labor Department's weekly report.

Don't dish it out if you can't take it, honey.....
These numbers never reflect the un-employed self-employed!
I’m not selling anyone short. Almost everyone has the ability to learn new things, they just lack the desire. I’m merely making an observation that what holds most people back is limitations they place on themselves and it is absolutely true. If you want to achieve success you have to be willing to poke your head through and play on the next level. That might mean traveling to where the work (and money) is. It might mean taking some risks. It always involves developing broad based skills that are marketable. The overwhelming majority of people I meet could be far better off financially if they would spend their idle time doing something productive, as opposed to watching TV, or playing video games, or drinking, or whatever. Opportunity still exists, but you can’t sit back and wait for it to come to you. That will never happen. If you want it you have to make it happen.
I think there may be a difference of opinion here on the definition of “success”.
Good one.
I'll compare net worth with you any day of the week. Come to Chattanooga sometime and I'll show you what I mean by success.
On the morning of the day when they announce the new jobless claims, there's often an article saying that the jobs outlook is improving ... and then there's an announcement like this one, which is labeled a "surprise."
Clearly an attempt at pre-emptive spin.
Question is: how long can the MSM maintain the pretense of being surprised by these "higher-than-expected" results?
Your post is inspiring. I am going to start doing this. Thank you for sharing.
I suppose wanting to stay in one place and raise your family personally is sort of backward.
You can define success, and the achievement of it, any way you like, as can I. You decided to travel far and wide to gain financial success. I decided to figure out a way to do it close to home so that I could participate in my family's life on a daily basis. To me, that was very much a part of the definition. Could I have made more money if I had made the choices you did? Maybe. I wasn't willing to risk the downside of that by skimping on the other responsibilities I had to my family. The result is grown children who are educated, well adjusted, self sufficient, caring, loving, contributing members to society. I also have a very happy marriage to a man I fall in love with more and more every day. Oh yeah, and my net worth is just fine, I assure you, but that's just icing on the cake. I'm not sure I could have achieved all that and met my definition of success by traveling 6 weeks at a time. Maybe you were able to; maybe it wasn't part of your definition; maybe family wasn't even a factor for you.
Just because someone isn't living up to your definition of success doesn't mean they're living a life of mediocrity, as you said I was.
I can list all the jobs I've held since I was 12 and every day since if you like(yes, I too, worked my way through college) but I really don't see the point of it.
I'm sure Chattanooga is lovely but I don't need to go there to see what success looks like. I'm fortunate to see what it looks like right where I am.
“I got bored with that so I joined the Army to kill people”
Sick pup.
