A lot of folks will call that the Stars and Bars. Its not, Its the St Andrews cross-or like I call it the Battle Flag.

The Stars and bars are a whole lot different.

I got both around here someplace, as well as a lot of Union state flags. Of course Old glory is one of them.

I know from working in both Sweden and Norway that the Norwegians see the Swedes as pampered and effeminate. One guy I worked with in Asker Norway hated the Swedes with a passion, as his parents had been killed by German troops allowed passage through Sweden.

When I was in the USN, I pulled liberty in Mallorca. The interesting thing about Mallorca (besides the er...um...topless women there) is that it is kind of divided up into four sections, one of which is the “Scandinavian” section.

We went to Texas Jacks early on where we stood on each other’s shoulders to write our names on the walls, then later went to some big restaurant on top of a mountain. There were probably ten of us, and we were in this big, beautiful restaurant with large circular padded booths that had panoramic views of the surrounding craggy terrain and ocean.

There was a guy who was going around to the tables taking pictures of the patrons, and he would go develop the pictures (this was around 1977, so he actually had to develop them) and bring them back to the table to sell them.

One of the guys with us was into photography, so he and the guy were talking technical stuff, and the guy asked him if he wanted to see the darkroom. He eagerly jumped up and off they went.

A few minutes later he frantically runs back to the table, and says “The guy showed me his darkroom, but as soon as we got in there, he was on his knees and began to try to unzip my pants!”

We all just fell out laughing...”What the hell did you expect, going to see “his darkroom”!

Anyway, at some point later in the evening, I was severely intoxicated. I found myself sitting at one of those circular booths with a whole group of Scandinavian women, real beauties, all with long, blond hair and tanned skin. Just beautiful. I had no idea how I got there, but I got the impression we had been conversing. I looked, and it appeared to be an extended family, with the youngest girls in their mid teens, and the oldest ones appearing to be in their forties, but still pretty darn good looking to a 19 year old guy.

But they weren’t talking now, they were just looking at me.

Anyway, I began to wonder who these women were, how I had got there, and what we had been talking about, when...I began to feel queasy. It was time to go. I excused myself, and walked into the foyer of the restaurant to find my way outside.

As the queasiness got stronger and stronger, that voice inside me said “Hurry up, man. You don’t have much time.” I began to scan for the exit.

The problem was, it was a circular foyer, and there were long drapes that hung from floor to ceiling all the way around. Exits outside and into the restaurant were hidden behind staggered sections of the drapes, so as you viewed them, it looked like a solid circular room with draped walls. No furniture.

I began to grab at the curtains and pull them, looking behind them for the exit, faster and faster as the nausea rose in me. I began to get frantic, and...there was a door. I opened it preparing to run through it, and it was a damned mop closet.

Then, from the angle I was at, I saw the exit. I bolted for it and clamped my hand down tightly over my mouth, trying to fend off the inevitable.

I shot through the door onto the landing, just as a couple came up the steps, and at that point, several thin, symmetrical jets spewed forth propulsively from between my fingers clamped over my mouth.

I often think of what must have gone through the minds of that couple that passed me...”Don’t eat the fish”? I spent an indeterminate time in the bushes until a friend of mine from the ship found me and took me back. During the ride back on the highway, the driver kept turning around and yelling at me in spanish, what could have only been “He better not puke in my cab!” I had to open the door at highway speeds several times, then finally spent the remainder of the journey with my head lolling out the open window.

God certainly does watch over dogs and drunk sailors. But the thing is, any time I see a group of beautiful, blond, long-haired women, that evening is the first one that jumps into my head.

I suppose it could be worse, but I’m not sure how...:)

Your Confederate Naval Jack also doubled as the Army of Tennessee Battle Flag, which was always rectangular not square, although at first it featured (heraldically correct, thanks to the attentions of an educated officer) six-pointed stars.

In the Western Department, the rectangular Tennessee Battle Flag was also used, without white fimbrations and with a larger star at the crux, in Gen. Granger's division, and without fimbrations but with blue and red reversed, in Taylor's. Polk's division, in the Army of Tennessee, used a Cross of St. George, again with the colors reversed, first without, and then later on with, the white fimbrations. The first version also used a sky blue field, the later one dark blue (and resembled a star-spangled Icelandic flag).

With a red field and blue cross, the CBF resembles in some respects the national flag of Norway.

I work with both Norwegians and Swedes. They take their potshots at each other, but it's always amicable. The Norwegians are much more fun to hang out with.

And as it relates to this article, the Norwegians I know seem to all use a form of dip (they call it snoos). Even seen a few girls with cans. Except for the accents, they're almost Southern.

“Norwegians are to the Swedes as the Mexicans are to (north) Americans. My Swedish colleagues roll their eyes and just lay into the “dopey, slow, lazy” Norwegians. Sheesh!”

- I'm Swedish and although my opinion is that Norwegians have a very different attitude towards work and especially team work than we do, they're honest, intelligent and do know how to work hard.

BUT, for some reason - like perhaps that of having been isolated, not only from the rest of Europe, but even from each other throughout history - they are very much of individuals.

Americans too are individualistic minded, but not in the same way.

Europeans and other immigrants who've shaped USA into what it is today mostly stemmed from densely populated urban or rural areas, but few parts of Norway has ever been densely populated over a long time.

One specific fact that plays a role here is that of the unique impact on demographics the Black Death had on Norwegian soil compared to the rest of Scandinavia. In short, Denmark and Sweden recuperated much faster afterward while Norway failed to catch up with the rest of Scandinavia.

- Poor you:)

Anyhow, you don’t have to know Swedish to benefit from this:
