I heard on (I think) Fox's Special Report on Friday that the companies are required to publicly report increased costs like this because of the Sarbanes-Oxley law and they could be in legal trouble for not reporting them. I guess they are supposed to report them in a 4 point font in some remote footnote in the annual report, not on national television.
