Nancy Pelosi told the public that wed have to pass ObamaCare to find out all of the surprises Democrats had loaded into it. Since its passage, weve discovered a number of them, including the elimination of a tax credit that kept seniors on private medication coverage that has forced publicly-held corporations like AT&T, Caterpillar, John Deere, and Verizon to take massive charges against this years earnings. Earlier this week, the Associated Press discovered a new mandate, this time on chain restaurants, that is at once petty, paternalistic, and anti-growth:
A requirement tucked into the nations massive health care bill will make calorie counts impossible for thousands of restaurants to hide and difficult for consumers to ignore. More than 200,000 fast food and other chain restaurants will have to include calorie counts on menus, menu boards and even drive-throughs.
The new law, which applies to any restaurant with 20 or more locations, directs the Food and Drug Administration to create a new national standard for menu labeling, superseding a growing number of state and city laws. President Barack Obama was expected to sign the health care legislation Tuesday.
The idea is to make sure that customers process the calorie information as they are ordering. Many restaurants currently post nutritional information in a hallway, on a hamburger wrapper or on their Web site. The new law will make calories immediately available for most items.

Another “we can’t think for ourselves” moment.....
Must feed the cattle properly. Welcome to the USSA
Pray for America
Oh well, it was a great country while it lasted. Thanks Progressives!
The CEOs should announce about 2,500,000 layoffs and see how Obummer squirms then as the companies right size again. Healthcare will cause many more layoffs this year
why are they having to post it anyway? nanny nanny nanny
A lot of expense and hassle for the restaurant owners, and most people will ignore the labels anyway. Those who bother to read them won’t find accurate information—recipes change, sometimes slightly, sometimes a lot. What a crock.
Keep writing SCOTUS and beseeching them to hear Orly Taitz [or one of the other] Lawsuits against 0bama.
I contend that the QUICKEST and BEST way to end the debacle named 0bama is through SCOTUS declaring him ineligible to be President and therefore anything he’s signed by fiat or legislation to be Null and Void.
Please do this even if you think it’s futile. It only takes one little straw placed on top of all the other straws to break the back of a camel. Your letter may be that final little straw.
Barack Obama is now your meal time nanny.
Ummm... re: the AT&T thing... I actually agree with it. Do you know what the provision is? It was an *error* in the tax code.
From BusinessWeek:
http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-03-26/at-t-to-take-1-billion-charge-on-health-care-reform-update1-.html
“AT&T previously received a tax-free benefit from the government to subsidize health-care costs for retirees, who would otherwise be on a Medicare Part D plan. Under the new bill, AT&T will no longer be able to deduct that subsidy.”
AT&T was getting money from the government and then being able to deduct that same amount from their taxes — a double bonus. They can still get the money, but getting the money shouldn’t mean your taxes on *other* earnings should be lower.
This was a stupid rule and I’m glad to see it changed. Maybe the price was too high, but this one provision, I agree with.
Every single aspect of your life, every single activity, hobby, sport, pass time will be evaluated and taxed based on the government's assessment of its impact on the cost of health care.
I think if I ran a fast food joint, I’d make it an advertising campaign.
We’ve sell the highest calorie burger and fries combo in town, and more calories for the dollar of any of our competitors. We’ll even throw in a fried ice cream dessert for free.
As others have stated, the ultimate goal of these fascists is to control every single aspect of our lives. All of these are baby steps, soon they will be jackboot steps unless we stop them. I’m older than dirt, and I remember the lessons of WWII and pre-WWII. Lots of people have either forgotten them or were never taught. (Lots of people think I’m a silly old alarmist.)
The chains should test this in the courts.
By the time these fast food restaurants add employee health care, reprinting costs for all menus and packaging, a possible Added Value Tax, and who knows what else, a Big Mac will probably come in at a meager $15......
Don’t laugh...a whopper vale meal here in Sweden is close to $10.
