Reid touts NRA tie, reaches out to activists as Tea Partiers rally

As thousands of Tea Party activists rally in his hometown of Searchlight, Nevada, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is burnishing his Second Amendment credentials.

Reid’s re-election campaign describes National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre as "one of the senator’s supporters." The two are at a $60 million Clark County shooting park which, according to the Reid campaign, wouldn't have opened without the senator’s help.

In a statement to CNN regarding Saturday’s Tea Party rally in his hometown, the Senate’s top Democrat said: "I'm happy so many people came to see my hometown of Searchlight and spend their out-of-state money especially in these tough economic times. Ultimately though this election will be decided by Nevadans, not people from other states who parachute in for one day to have a tea party."

Reid’s camp is trying to welcome the Tea Partiers. The Nevada State Democratic Party and the Reid campaign have set up a hospitality tent not far from the Tea Party rally site. "We are serving Tea and donut holes in recognition that Senator Reid just passed health care reform

You can bet it was paid for with tax money if Reid had anything to do with it.

Yeah they welcomed one bus by throwing eggs at it.
Do ya think the Lame-streamers will report that one?

If one of us had thrown an egg, we’d be in jail and it would be on NYSlimes front page.

True, but there are worse things to spend it on. Prior to the 60s, the US Government provided arms and ammunition to shooting clubs all over the country.

This is why I dropped my NRA membership this year.... all of these NRA endorsed candidates voted for Obama-care, which will be the mechanism used to disarm America.

I'll probably drop mine if these idiots endorse Salazar (Colorado) again. He's a Pelosi lap-dog who seems to vote pro-gun when his vote isn't needed to make a difference. I don't think the NRA takes this little detail into account.

The NRA isn’t in general politics, never has been. Only the 2nd matters to them. No reason to not support them.

Is Reid claiming he got tax payer dough for a shooting park? Even so it won’t save him he is going into retirement.

I respectfully (not saying you're speaking nonsense) disagree with you. I can only conclude that you've never heard the old saying “lay down with dogs and get fleas”.

We have just had a very clear demonstration of what happens when a Judas goat becomes a leader. It is not an accident that the NRA Democrats are from mostly conservative areas. They know that without their NRA bonafides they'd have a hard time getting elected or reelected.

I am not an NRA life member but have lived with one for forty years. I'm not unfamiliar with the organization and it's aims, which I fully support and respect. But I do not speak from a position of ignorance, but rather from one of long observation.

It has to be understood what the NRA’s agenda is. It’s not conservative politics as a whole, just the RKBA. By the measure of their goals, they are doing just fine. No new gun control legislation has even been considered. Courts are overturning existing gun control statutes which have been in place for years. Concealed Carry keeps expanding across he country with more and more reciprocity.

You expect them for some reason to break with their obviously effective methodology to take up your causes for you. It is not going to happen. Yes, I understand the NRA supports people who could potentially do them harm, but the key word is ‘potentially’. The harm is not happening from a second amendment point of view and that is what matters to the NRA. A single focus organization is just that, single focus.

Honestly I would rather the second amendment be accepted by all parties as untouchable and politics moved on to something else, so I wouldn’t have to worry about the issue. Would such a state of politics bother you?

Where in the world did you get such a ridiculous idea? I certainly didn't say anything like that. My “cause” in this instance is the very same as the NRAs, you seem intent on preaching to the choir.

"Honestly I would rather the second amendment be accepted by all parties as untouchable and politics moved on to something else, so I wouldn’t have to worry about the issue. Would such a state of politics bother you?"

Of course it wouldn't bother me, anymore than then a statement that free speech is guaranteed by the Constitution and be therefore set aside as untouchable...but you see how that is going don't you?

Let's agree that we have a different opinion of how to achieve our mutual aims and be done with this conversation. You seem to be unable to process what the danger is, hopefully you'll never find out, but I fear you'll be greatly disappointed in the near future.

Very well said. I was just about to jump on this myself when I came across your post; worth repeating:

Let’s put it this way- if the NRA didn’t work the way it does, do you think there would be a single Democrat stopping gun control measures that Holder (and the big O) would love to see? If they were simply an adjunct of the GOP and didn’t consistently stick to their issue they would be marginalized and the largest Democratic majority in quite a while would have rammed plenty of gun control down our craws.

However because the NRA is plenty smarter about this than many who have posted here, even Pelosi, who hates guns with a passion won’t even entertain bringing up gun control legislation on the floor of the House.

I am also an NRA Life Member.

This isn’t true. I see plenty of train wrecks in the future owing to the collectivist and statist nonsense the Left is trying to force on us. However I am not willing to blunt an effective tool on a job to which it is not suited. The NRA is exceptional at the task to which it focuses and changing focus would limit its effectiveness. They cannot operate on unproven theories espoused by some, but not all, of their members which will blunt their ability to act now.

I agree that many pro gun Democrats are likely to cause harm to the gun cause in the future owing to their statist inclinations. However the key word above is ‘likely’. I can’t prove it any more than you can, and as such a group which is trying to maximize effectiveness based on facts and cold hard reality can’t base their actions on speculation.

Likely? If I were likely to have a flat I'd change the tire.
