America Will Survive ObamaCare
Forbes.com ^ | 3/26/2010 | Rich Karlgaard

Today I hiked up Mt. Cargill in southern New Zealand near the town of Dunedin, which in Gaelic means Edinburgh. The Scots and their diaspora have done plenty of things right over the years. The modern state of New Zealand is one of them. The intellectual framework for capitalism is another. Thank you, Adam Smith.

Will ObamaCare destroy the pillars of Adam Smith's capitalism as we know it? Such is the worry in America. It's instructive to watch the debate from thousands of miles away, here down under in New Zealand. I really hate ObamaCare. But I find it more amusing than worrisome. It's like watching self-important student politician poseurs in high school puffing about. Such students, recall, weren't cool. They were dorks. They were too feeble for sports. They couldn't do anything useful with their hands, like fix a car. They were worthless pieces of ... and nobody paid them any attention.

Let's be careful to not pay Washington excessive attention and overrate its capabilities. Truth is, capitalism and freedom are too strong to kill. Pelosi can't kill it. Reid can't kill it. This is especially true in age of the cable TV and the Internet. The perfidies of ObamaCare are instantly known. Never forget that Americans are a creative, strong people. We will not be deterred. We will figure out workarounds. (Anecdotal evidence: Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged is a hot seller once again. It is No. 189 on Amazon.)

American demographics and politics do not favor a leftward march. The Millennial Generation (those between 18 and 29) loved Obama and voted for him by a 2:1 margin. They saw Obama as cool, and why not? But it was all image and perception.

"American demographics and politics do not favor a leftward march."

Wishful thinking at best.

Or North Korea. No one can tell me NK people are stupid dolts.

That is a sobering point. I'm sure North Koreans living as slaves are as intelligent and creative as their successful South Korean brothers.

Yup. And I hope you didn't think I was trying to snark you.

I've been browsing through FR and getting more and more pissed at what's going on.... how far we've fallen in such a short time. I get sadder and sadder too. And I keep wondering what the next slap in the face is going to be.

Its like being an abused spouse. "He only hits me for my own good." "They gave us ZeroCare cause they love us."

I just wonder where the fight against this leads next.

Americans will eliminate Obamacare!

I remember the dark days of the 1974 recession, Jimmynomics, Soviet expansion, Iran hostage taking.

Extrapolating that trend turned out to be wrong. Reagan was the unpredictable, at least to me at the time, event that changed everything. That kind of social quantum leap could happen again.

Haha, yes...

I wrote ‘Nigeria’ because that’s the country no one wants to do business with. There’s so much corruption and internet fraud that millions of sellers have just that one condition: We Don’t Ship To Nigeria.

I got much smap e-mail from Nigeria. Always folks pretending to be the conservator to an elderly dying lady with an enormous fortune. She’d give it to a true Christian to spent it justly. I only had to send $ 1,000 and my bank account no. and my PIN code. Hehe.

The death sentence for the world’s no. # business country would therefore be to become the new Nigeria...

I wish you guys and gals over there all the strength necessary to fight the left.

Kalgaard makes some good points, particulary the voter numbers. But remember, everyone said the same thing about Hitler and Germany: "the people will rein him in," the other "officials will stop him," "England and France won't let him get out of control."

Demonic-backed people such as Obama are often immunne to "normal" forces.

And do we want to count on the Red Chinese for ANYTHING?

That, alas, is true. Remember the unsuccessful assassination attempts against Hitler.

True but one has to remember the Bible says that evil will be banished forever in the end.

The part about American innovation is true, but no matter how innovative you are, no matter how high you fly the overloaded 747 that is our budget, when the plane runs out of gas it's coming down.

obama's plans loads more and more on the already overloaded airplane while clipping its wings and fueling it with watered down JetA. You only do that if you're stupid or you want a plane crash and I don't think obama is stupid.

Economics and human behavior, just like flying airplanes, are governed by unalterable rules. Break the rules and the rules break you back. Mayday! Mayday!!

Seems that every victory we achieve can be reversed. Every one of their victories is permanent.

I’m not optimistic.

I’m not preparing to shrug. I am preparing to leave.

Agreed. This has been the most aggravating thing about this last year. We have throw all common sense and rxperience to the wind and are making the decision to race off a cliff in so many ways.

This is going to end very badly. There simply is nothing in history or reality to predict otherwise.

I had two reactions to this article:

(1) It is delusional.

(2) The writer by having it published gets to charge off his vacation in New Zealand as a business expense.

Ah yes, this coming from a man who is in a country that refuses to allow US warships from making ports of call because the ships are either nuclear powered, or may be carrying nuclear weapons.

Yeah, tell us about freedom, Mr. Kiwi.
