Obamacare, or H.R. 3590, mandates that after 2013 everybody carries essential insurance coverage or be penalized (see Chapter 48 section 5000A). The goal of the law was to provide insurance for all obviously and making requiring everyone to buy it is certainly one way to achieve this goal.
And, of course, with everyone now pitching in the burden will be shared and rates will drop, at least that's how the theory goes.
There is a religious exemption, however, to this mandate which can be found in section d of the above section

Amen Brother!! If any man be a prophet, it was he.
Are these people not required to buy AUTO insurance?
And what in the hell happened to “separation of church and state?” I’m sorry - but if the ACLU can file lawsuit after lawsuit proclaiming “separation” of church/state, am I wrong to follow the train of thought that there should be NO religious exemptions?
What the “h..l happened to the separation of church and state these liberals are ALWAYS preaching about? I guess the only ones to be separated are Christians and Jews.
I’d pay for this health care BS before I’d ever say I was muslim.
Obama's staff is exempt from Obamacare, and many of them are muslim.
I’m starting an Amish offshoot, the Florida Reformed Amish Church, or FRAC...
We’re adapting Amish religion to new technology..,
For example we ban video games, but allow night vision goggles. Notebook computers are allowed, but ipads are not. Hybrid cars are a no no, but V-8’s are appropriate technology.
You must look good in black.
Is there yet a list of all religious groups that get exemptions?
Everybody can become muslim and make bacon required eating.
Can’t beat em one way, beat em the other.
Can anyone in existing Christian medical sharing pools also get out of Obamacare, since they are already practicing a system outside of “medical insurance”?
Are Mennonites also exempted? They’re allowed cars, computers, and have a strong work ethic.
Become certified as a minister there, then create an official schism therein.
I’ve always heard that if you want to get rich don’t start a business. Start a religion. I’m going to start one. It’s “The Second Amish Christian Church of Texas”. Our belief is we are commanded not to do anything that’s not in the constitution but to take all health care that is available so we may be strong in fighting all of God’s enemies”.
I believe that any group that currently is exempted from social security would also be exempt from Obamacare. That includes Mennonites and Scientologists.
Mmm hmmmm.
Exactly.
I found the full requirements:
Members of certain religious groups may qualify for an exemption from the Social Security tax. To do so, they must:
* Waive their rights to all benefits under the Social Security Act, including hospital insurance benefits; and
* Meet the following requirements:
1. Be a member of a recognized religious sect conscientiously opposed to accepting benefits;.
2. Be a member of a religious sect that makes a reasonable provision for its dependent members and has done so continuously since December 31, 1950.
3. Have never received or been entitled to any benefits payable under Social Security programs;
If you meet all these stipulations you can claim the Social Security self-employment tax exemption. To do so, file IRS Form 4029 (Application for Exemption From Social Security and Medicare Taxes and Waiver of Benefits) with the Social Security Administration.
Thanks. I’ve never heard that Muslims meet these requirements.
Any demoniation, to quote, ‘so long as it is a sinerely held conviction’.
How is that legal?
No, all that people are going on is the wording of this part of Chapter 48 Section 5000:
(d) Applicable Individual- For purposes of this section--
`(1) IN GENERAL- The term `applicable individual' means, with respect to any month, an individual other than an individual described in paragraph (2), (3), or (4).
`(2) RELIGIOUS EXEMPTIONS-
`(A) RELIGIOUS CONSCIENCE EXEMPTION- Such term shall not include any individual for any month if such individual has in effect an exemption under section 1311(d)(4)(H) of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act which certifies that such individual is a member of a recognized religious sect or division thereof described in section 1402(g)(1) and an adherent of established tenets or teachings of such sect or division as described in such section.
To check out the various sections mentioned go to Thomas.gov & search for HR 3590.
FWIW, I couldn't find section 1402 (g) (1). It seems to stop at (f).
The reference to 1402(g)(1) appears to be from the IRS. There are other connotations, however.
