Original title: Palin: I snuck across Canadanian border for healthcare By Eric Zimmermann - 03/08/10 11:33 AM ET

Sarah Palin's family used to "hustle" across the Canadian border to get healthcare, the former Alaska Governor said this weekend.

In a speech in Calgary, Palin called it "ironic" that while growing up in a small Alaskan town near the Canadian border, her family used to sneak across to take advantage of the Canadian healthcare system.

"We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada," she said, according to Medicine Hat News (via Dave Weigel.) "And I think now, isn't that ironic."

It's ironic, of course, because Palin and other Republicans have argued that Democratic healthcare reform will put the U.S. on the path towards Canada's "socialized" healthcare system.

Nope, many of those in the US are ‘foreign’ CANADIANS. Up here they are from Pakistan, Russia, Bangaladesh, India etc.

Trust me, I grew up in Canada before medicare and the Canada Health Act. I have lived in Connecticut and am now back in canuckstan (family reasons). If you have the same experience I don’t know how you can argue.

She was six years old? So even if her parents had "hustled" to Moscow and took an oath of fealty before Khrushchev I fail to see how this episode pertains to her now.
Much ado o'er nothing I believe.

Why do you think this was a joke? You think they didn’t go to the nearest medical facility to get treatment for her brother’s burn?

You mean “some” of her supporters right?

I mean I complemented her on the remark after all.

Just as the Sun Birds in Az travel to Mexico for dental care and eye glasses. Cash is King. Our family GP is on “retainer” for our primary care...

“Ruh roh! Sounds like Sarah got caught telling a lie.”

Well, as another poster mentioned - she would have been about six at the time. And - it happened to her brother, not her. Hard to say if it was an outright lie (ferry to Juneau or train to Whitehorse) or she just remembered wrong. One of the speeches may have been more “off the cuff” and she got it wrong. Or - perhaps one time a sibling or friend was on the ferry/train and she got that mixed up. Or - she “remembers” the story a bit differently to fit the situation - but hopefully not quite a lie. “Yes, they need a road. Hmmm. Didn’t Johnny when he was burned have to wait for the ferry to get to Juneau? I think so....”

Or - she just out and out lied. I know with me it would be one of the former. Heck, I can’t even remember stuff that happened to ME when I was six. (Or 26 for that matter!) Of course in a prepared speech one should be more careful in getting the facts straight.

In a reply to that post, I note that you could well rush the boy to canada for initial treatment, and then take him to an American hospital on the ferry for long-term care or follow-up.

A lot of jumping to conclusions on this thread.

Her supporters know that people like you will twist anything she says to reflect badly on her, as you folks have done it so often.

They have an automatic ‘BS’ reaction because you have so frequently lied, or left out the context of what was said.

Maybe you should read a story called ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’ to fully understand why no one takes you seriously!

It could well be that when he first was burnt, they needed emergency treatment, and it was quickest to go to Canada (maybe the ferry had just left, or was ice-bound). After initial treatment, if the burn was bad it could require out-patient visits, or even hospitalization. And being American, they would want to go to the hospital in their state for that, and would use the ferry.

That makes a lot of sense. Wouldn't it be a hoot if the MSM gets all worked up, and then her mom turns out to still have doctor bills from both places!

Yes, her brother, story from her parent’s perspective would say “son”. Was in the 60s, so it’s pretty easy to know it wasn’t Palin’s son.

she was living as a child in Skagway and that it was about 6 hours from there to Whitehorse in Yukon.

Unless her brother's injury just happened to coincide with the ferry schedule to Juneau, Whitehorse (via the White Pass and Yukon Route) was the quickest health care available.

The Klondike Highway to Whitehorse, Yukon wasn't yet built and there may never be a road to Juneau.

If Wasilla didn’t have a large medical facility, and there was a large medical facility over the border in Canada, I can see why Palin’s family would consider Canadian care at times. I’ll bet they had to pay out of pocket though, not being Canadian citizens. And that way they may not have had to wait in line.

Yes, of course. If i meant “all”, I would say “all supporters”, so the “some” is implied, but I should say it from time to time.

There is a special sensitivity among some supporters that leads them to deny the truth in a mistaken notion that the truth is bad for Palin, when usually it isn’t.

This was a few words in a speech in Canada. You really know nothing of the speech. You speculations are a waste of everyones time. There are actual facts on this thread. Whitehorse was a direct train ride from Skagway. It was the territorial capital. Health care was free market, not socialized. What did she or her family do wrong based on the reality of that time???
