*snip*
A return to military commissions would be a major concession to Republicans. And administration officials appear to be using the potential shift as a down payment on a political deal to speed the closure of Guantanamo
***by allowing the federal government to purchase an Illinois prison to hold detainees.
A formal recommendation has not yet been made to Obama, and an administration official said a decision remains weeks away. Still, the idea, first reported in the Washington Post, represents a trial balloon to test how the administration's reversal would be received by liberals and conservatives.
*snip*
But some Democrats hope the call to move Mohammed to military court would soften opposition to closing Guantanamo and moving detainees to Thomson. Before such a transfer could take place, Congress would have to give its stamp of approval. The approval would be a breakthrough for the Obama plan.
Under the plan, the Bureau of Prisons would purchase the near-empty state prison in Thomson to house both federal inmates as well as some of the detainees displaced by the closure of Guantanamo.
It would take time to upgrade the Thomson prison before any military commission trial could be held there. The prison needs security upgrades as well as construction of a trial facility changes that would take until next spring, by some estimates.

I knew they'd try to find a way to use that IL prison to bring the beasts here when they got trashed about NYC, while our brave troops fight and die to keep them away, God bless them. Insanity.

Yeah. That is, if Hussein can get all of the concessions HE wants in return. Of course he’s talking to the right sell-out, traitor in Lindsey Grahamnesty.

Backroom deal. No trial in NYC in exchange for agreeing to close down Gitmo.
What a dirty deal for Americans.

On the other hand you know those inmates would prefer GITMO to Illinois where they have cold weather and lots of snow. Most of them aren’t used to winter weather.
