Pelosi Goes Pro-Life ! The House Dems Don't Have the Votes Without Stupak
National Review ^ | 03/05/2010 | Daniel Foster

If the Democrats had the votes in the House to pass the Senate bill without Bart Stupak's Dozen, would they be suggesting something as desperate as this?

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said Thursday that lawmakers could draft separate pieces of legislation with abortion language to earn the support of anti-abortion rights Democrats on healthcare reform legislation. . . .

"Separate pieces of legislation could be passed that would relate to that," Hoyer told reporters after a meeting with Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) "That's a possibility. I talked to Mr. Stupak today, and I'm going to be talking to him next week and he indicated he wanted to have some discussions with people. And I will do that."

Pelosi must be way short if she is considering burning her pro-choice caucus by bringing a separate pro-life measure to the floor.

But Pelosi said abortion isn't covered by the bill. She's such a liar it's amazing that there are 8% that are idiot enough to say Congress is doing a good job.

“They can’t change the Senate version!”

My understanding, too...it must be passed as is or they must start over.

This is where the radical, liberal extremists like Piglosi stick it to the "moderates". Unfortunately, the "moderates" will fall for it.

They’ll put it into something else to mollify them and then kill it after they have the votes.

Rush said yesterday that he thought Stupak might cave on some deal. Keep calling and faxing.

So, which comes first — the signed fixes or the signed health care bill?

Were I Stupak, I'd take a scene from a movie or two I've seen where each signs warily while keeping an eye on the other across the table. When both are finished, each scoots his document to the center of the table, keeping a hand on it and each grabs the document of their desire at the same instant. Don't be a dupe, Stupak, or we'll have to rename you STOOPID.

the thing is that they want them to pass the senate
bill and accept that a further bill will negate
any abortion provisions. Ain’t gonna happen but
there are those who are dumb enough to fall for it.

My understanding is they will pass the Senate version if the Senate passes a separate and distinct bill that is the Stupak amendment which the House will then also pass.

BTW, ain’t gonna happen.

I think they are making promises to ammend this afterwards. If Stupak believes her, he is not as bright as I had hoped. In case he hasn’t noticed, Pelosi is prone to lies, and lots of them!

The way I read it, they're not going to actually change the bill.

Bella Pelosi appears to be offering to allow the pro-life congress critters the chance to offer bills to change it after this version is past.

Not that you could trust Ms Nosferatu to actually carry through on her offer or that such a bill would be allowed to pass, but that's what she appears to be offering.

About the only way they could make that work would be a separate bill which said that no matter the content of any other bill passed by this congress, there will be no federal funds used to pay for, subsidize or in any way go to pro-abortion organizations. And that any bill passed by this congress with provisions to the contrary are hereby amended by this bill.

I think they can only bind this congress with such a bill. But would such a bill pass the Senate and be signed by 0bama? If I were Stupak, I would want it law before voting for the Senate bill.

What seperate pieces of legislation? It almost sounds like Stupak is one of the few Democrats in Congress that still has a brain. I don’t think he trusts Pelosi, Hoyer of Reid.

Stupak will likely cave, along with the other pro-life Dems.

Sad but very likely.

Hmm? I thought that was the purpose of reconciliation. That is to incorporate the changes the House wants by adding a follow-on reconciliation appendix that the Senate would agree to. If the House leadership isn’t willing to even put it into the Reconciliation agreement, it sounds like a double cross is in the works. That is, you so-called pro-lifers agree to obamacare and we promise to fix your problem later, and later never comes.

They just want the public to think they’re trying to get abortion out, they know it won’t happen.
