An Italian and a German passenger reportedly died while an old woman ended up with broken pair of legs when a wave as high as some 26 feet hit the Louis Majesty, a cruise ship carrying 1,350 passengers and 580 crew.

It annoys my wife but I like to stay at home. Traveler’s stories almost invariably convince me of this.

Also - I think - known as a soliton wave.
A 26-foot wave wouldn’t make it over the deck on most cruise ships ....
People have a hard time believing me that worst storms at sea I ever saw were in the Med. I remember feeling a little embarrassed that our DLG was sinking and I was going to die 50 miles off the coast of Ibiza.
what is DLG
yeah saw that 2
but someone died
Green water over your bow is never a good thing.
I guess the two dead people show that the wave did make it.
Which DLG? What Med cruise?
USS Leahy, CG-16 (formerly DLG-, a guided missile frigate), in late Jan. 1974. We were with the USS America task force, but were steaming ISE at the time. Had to pull in to Toulon for repairs. It was a significant storm and several vessels went down in the area. On the bridge, we heard people crying on the VHF and couldn’t do a damn thing to save them.
I think that is the designation for a guided missile cruiser.
Here's an article claiming that in this incident, windows on the 5th deck of the ship were broken, resulting in the fatalities and flooding:
Pic of the ship:
The only cruise I was ever on, our cabin was on the 14th floor, at least 100 ft above the water line. As I understand it, the 26 ft wave smashed cabin windows on the lower levels.
I don’t think the cruise ships in the Med are as large as the super cruise ships in the Gulf of Mexico.
They show the wave made it in, but don't provide any information on the accuracy of the estimated wave height of 26 feet. All decks on a decent-sized cruise ship are much higher than that from the water line.
That area, the Bay of Biscay, is notorious for rogue waves. Something about the undersea terrain is conducive to the formation of such waves.

I’d love to know what caused such an anomalous wave. I’m sure the same thing caused it that causes other waves, but apparently there was MUCH more of it.
