Ronald Graham lost a kidney and suffered a punctured colon when he was brutally stabbed on a Brooklyn street -- yet his attacker is about go free, thanks to a historic show of mercy by the state.
Don Juan Britt, 37, who has been locked up since 1996 for the attempted murder during a fight on St. Johns Place in Crown Heights, is slated to arrive home any day now after serving 15 years of a 20-year sentence.
Britt -- now $325,000 richer from a suit against the state -- will be the first person freed under Albany's newly expanded compassionate-release law after suffering a brain aneurysm that left him partially paralyzed. The law, established in 1992, allows parole for inmates with terminal or permanent medical conditions that make them no longer a danger to society.
An expanded version of the law went into effect in November -- to include sex offenders and other violent felons -- giving Britt his chance at freedom.

And what do the citizens of New York state get who have never been a threat to society nor will ever be?
What a joke. Who thinks this stuff up?
If this spreads to California I predict Charles Manson will develop terminal kidney disease within 6 months.
Good thinking.
Find people who commit crimes. Wait until they have nothing left to lose. Turn them loose on society.
Virtual guarantee of rape, armed robbery, molestation, and many other crimes.
Turn them loose with $300,000 in taxpayer money.
Does this apply to life-without-parole sentences? Isn’t the point to keep them there till they die?
Can they get medical care like they get in prison? No
Can they work to pay for a place to live, food? No
But..... they can do harm. Dying anyway. Might
as well take out anyone they want and maybe they
can go back to that cozy prison with food and medical.
What’s the down side here?
We have freakin’ idiots running the show!
Taking our lead from the Scot’s?
Compassion isn’t the only reason to release them; treating terminally ill patients can be expensive.
What better way to avoid all that expense (and putting prisoners on life-support for months) than by pushing them out the door, fast?
I have known people who have played death pools where they bet on which celebrities will join the choir in the next years. One of the rules of thumb of the game is the “Ronnie Biggs” rule, which states that prisoners are rarely as ill as they claim to be.
Ronnie Biggs, who helped pulled of the great train robbery of 1963, petitioned for compassionate release back in 2001 on the grounds that he was dying. While he certainly isn’t doing well, he’s still alive today.
I wonder if they get to hang out with the Lockerbie bomber?
Excellent idea. Make a hospital suck up the cost.
Not to worry! This law will only be applicable to convicts that are expected to die sometime in there life.
It can't be any more expensive in jail than out.
The state will still pick up the bill while they're on welfare or disability because no one will hire them. In the meantime, they have the opportunity to commit more crimes.
And just how many false diagnosis will be getting made to spring some of these guys, for money.
Bad decision. Another reason to leave NYS.
When will someone challenge those "officials" on that statement? Just who is gonna pick up the tab for the continued care? I'll bet when the full cost of the social services that will be delivered to the newly paroled felon is summed, it will show it to be far more costly to the gubermint than if they kept him in prison.
Their health care cost at work.
