The National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii and a tsunami advisory for the West Coast of the United States.
A NWS spokesman on CNN says it is estimated the tsunami waves will be 10 to 15 feet high when they hit Hawaii. The tsunmi waves could last up to six hours.
Recent buoy reports of wave heights vary from 5 to 16 feet.
Latest statement on Hawaii:
BULLETIN
TSUNAMI MESSAGE NUMBER 7
NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EWA BEACH HI
148 AM HST SAT FEB 27 2010
TO - CIVIL DEFENSE IN THE STATE OF HAWAII
SUBJECT - TSUNAMI WARNING SUPPLEMENT
A TSUNAMI WARNING CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII.
SNIP
EVALUATION
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.
THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
1119 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010
The NWS has also issued a tsunami warning for most of the Pacific region:
TSUNAMI BULLETIN NUMBER 006
PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER/NOAA/NWS
ISSUED AT 1147Z 27 FEB 2010
Here is a local report on the West Coast tsunami advisory:
A tsunami advisory has been issued for the California coast, including Del Norte County, following a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the central coast of Chile at 10:34 p.m. PST Friday.
The forecasted arrival time for Crescent City is 1:46 p.m. PST Saturday, however tsunamis can be dangerous for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not necessarily the largest, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center says.
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO AREAS WITHIN AND BORDERING THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND ADJACENT SEAS...EXCEPT ALASKA...BRITISH COLUMBIA... WASHINGTON...OREGON AND CALIFORNIA.

Ewa Beach is at the bottom, over the mtns, maybe it won’t be so bad. And they have an upstairs.
My brother and his wife live in Honolulu. Any predictions about beaches there?
Thanks,I watched some simulations of it and understand it now. I also saw a show on Einsteins theory of curved space and gravity and can grasp that too, I have to admit curved light still, well, throws me a curve though :)
Heh. The first weekend I was in my new house the local air raid sirens went off (the nuke ones). I was working in the garage. I stepped out into the driveway saw my new neighbor just standing there. I asked what was up.
Apparently my house is near a flash flood zone and the nuke sirens got co-opted by the city for flash flood alerts so they go off often with good rain storms.
It is true that He speaks through them often.
From the scattered information and models available, it appears the greater risk is in Hawaii than along the continental US Pacific Coast.
In large scale evacuations, people get injured simply in the abnormal disruption of routine workflow, so the risks of damage and injury might be greater if everybody were evacuated, than running the risk of the tsunami being nothing more than a 2-4 ft tide change.
(The again, if the forecaster’s family lives in Crescent City, they might not have time to evacuate if everybody else of the west coast were also evacuating, clogging up traffic,.....but I don’t think there were any ulterior motives...)
Haven’t heard but Fox News has reported that some warning sirens didn’t work.
Are your cats always this jumpy?
Hmmmm. Imagine what the Palins are doing?
Per Twiiter:
7.7-foot tsunami wave crashes into Talcahuano
To help understand, that’s 7.7 feet, on TOP of existing waves, with many minutes of water behind it.
The first waves should hit Hawaii about 4 hours from now at 11:19am Hawaii time, it is 7:09am right NOW there.
I’ve been watching those two myself.
Thanks for the prayers. My 22 year old son is on a vacation there...bicycling around the island of Maui and sleeping in the open. All circuits are busy when i call. I don’t know anything about Hawaii but I hope they have a good warning system for all the islands.
Oahu Beach is going to get it in the neck. Right in the middle of tourist season, too. All those miles of hotels.
Jeez. Hey, does anybody know what the contingency plan for the Pacific Fleet is at Pearl Harbor?
I turned it off and back on and it is working. Try that.
Honestly they have been the in the last two days a bit more unusual but its mostly because they hate having to stay inside, we just had over 8” of snow, last night was unreal the way they were behaving, as a feline barometer I would say its something.
I have no illusions that animals do indeed sense things we humans blow off.
NEW arrival times...Hilo, 11:05, Honolulu, 11:36. Just updated from the Pacific Tsunami Center at Ewa Beach.
Prayers up!
“does anybody know what the contingency plan for the Pacific Fleet is at Pearl Harbor?”
Get out to sea, long before it gets there...
