I don’t even feel 4.6 quakes. Gotta be over 5 for me.

Apparently Chile has has 13 quakes over 7.0 since 1973. Amazing.

The sewage system for many people was the beach at certain tide levels, and pigs to clean up what did not wash away. They lived in huts built 3 ft off the ground, no walls, just roofs - easy to rebuild after a typhoon, no corrugated tin roofs that can decapitate.

These islands are not meant for 21st century living standards. Before ‘stuff’ got shipped to the islands, waste was manageable, because it was all “biodegradable.” Now they live with all of the packaging that has nowhere to go but out on a barge and dumped into the ocean.

We sailed through miles of floating debris in the ‘center’ of the Pacific ocean - a geographic area similar to the Sargasso Sea in the Atlantic ocean - where all the currents swirl past but the central water stays put ( my elementary description of a technical phenomenon.)

I would think in our immediate area maybe 50,000. Fortunately, there are a whole lot of mountains, thousands of feet high, right next to the coast. There is plenty of time to get that high and yes, there is communication that should sound an alarm.

There are, however, small coastal villages all up and down this north coast and on over to the “bird’s head” which is the northwest of the island. It is those on those small islands about whom I’m concerned. It all depends on how much the wave is disrupted by the islands to the east of here and whether they can act as buffers.

The best I can do at this point is let you know what happens after it happens.

No, but I will look for it now.

Try to remain calm. Let’s face it, if you had to put your family in the hands of anyone on this planet, wouldn’t it be the USMC? Seriously.

Make sure your cell is fully charged and go about your business. I’m sure there will be so many FReeperprayers going out for Hawaii, that the good Lord is going to have to hire a traffic cop, to keep them all straightened out.

You can give us the good news later today. :)

Maybe Rush will loan EIB 1 to FNC to get Geraldo to Hawai’i. He lives in south Florida so no problem....

If every point is 32 to 1, a 7.0 to a 8.8 is 512 times stronger, not 64. CNN is doing funny math.

If their political sense is so defective, what could we expect about something in the real world?

Demoblaster Santiago Airport in Chile is now saying that it’ll be closed for 72hours, as opposed to 24 hours before. Airport terminal is in bad shape. less than 20 seconds ago from TweetDeck

What in the last 100 years was ever near that magnitude?

Also in Chile, the 9.5 Valdivia Earthquake on May 22, 1960.

Apparently there are two different scales being used to describe earthquakes. One is the Richter and the other measures ‘energy’ at a calculation that uses the 32 (rounded) number.

It feels strange to defend CNN, but they are doing a great job of describing what is happening.

Different ground areas feel it differently, I don’t think anything less than 4.5 I would notice, I had one here in Wasilla Alaska that was 5.3, was hardly much to talk about, all rock up here in my neighborhood.

When I was in the Dominican Republic in 1979, I was squatting down trying to get wadded up paper out of one of the desks in the classroom when I lost my balance and fell over. I thought, "Geez, I can't even keep my balance." Then I heard other teachers yelling something about an earthquake. I ran out into the courtyard with them and for the next half minute or so I could feel the ground moving back and forth. It was a weird feeling to consider that EVERYTHING was moving back and forth. And that was only a 3.6 earthquake. Of course, that part of the the DR is the Cibao Valley through which runs the Septentrional Fault, the one that goes off into the Puerto Rico Trench, one of the deepest ocean trenches.

Apparently the CNN dude said they’re not referring it as the Richter scale anymore...
