The scale is logarithmic, so going from 4.6 to 5.6 to 6.6 to 7.6 to 8.6 would be significant (a power of 10). This earthquake would be 10000 times as powerful as the one you felt.

BTW, the monument to the American troops who fought and fell at Tarawa was a disgrace when we visited it. I hope that has been rectified in the ensuing years. I just recently saw a documentary on the net about an elderly Corpsman who fought there that was campaigning to do something about the shoals of trash and human waste on the beach there. As far as I know, the place is still a mess.

I will pray for your safety. Even if you are not directly affected I imagine (if the wave comes) that the rest of your area will need all hands on deck, and tons of resources.
What is the approximate population of the area that will be affected? How much evacuation will be needed?

If this is as big an event as they seem to now be anticipating...there is going to be chaos for a few weeks.
Wow. Did you see the devastation map for Samoa?
I have to leave for work now. I have not gotten my family chain call for family in Hawaii. I realize there is nothing I can do for them at this point, I have to trust the Marine Corp. at K-Bay, and simply pray. I imagine the base has already been mobilized and all concerned are just too busy to respond right now.
This situation has me feeling worse than when they go to operational silence.
Well, on to work today.
