Those are all aftershocks?

If so.....OMG. I went through a 4.6 in Ohio and I honestly thought the world was coming to an end.

*gasp*

Tsunami alert for Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay

Residents have been warned to stay away from beachfront areas on Sunday morning because of a tsunami alert.
The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre issed the warning after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Chile.
The warning urges people not to go to the coastline to see the potential tsunami
Marine areas face the greatest threat, with the potential for dangerous waves, strong ocean currents and foreshore flooding between Point Danger and Double Island Point, Moreton Bay, for several hours from 8.15am (Queensland time) on Sunday.

The first waves are expected after 8.15am at Coolangatta, after 9am at Maroochydore and after 9.15am at Brisbane.
“Boats in harbours, estuaries or shallow coastal water should return to shore,’’ the warning says.
“Secure your boat and move away from the waterfront. Vessels already at sea should stay offshore in deep water until further advised.
“Do not go to the coast to watch the tsunami, as there is the possibility of dangerous, localised flooding of the immediate foreshore.”
For emergency assistance, call Emergency Management Queensland on 132 500.

Different ground areas feel it differently, I don’t think anything less than 4.5 I would notice, I had one here in Wasilla Alaska that was 5.3, was hardly much to talk about, all rock up here in my neighborhood.

Every yellow dot on the chart in post 777 is an island with populations that will be affected by this tsunami.

I was using Google Earth to look at some Marine Corps history recently. I looked at Tarawa Atoll, the island of Betio. It is CARPETED with dwellings. The island is about a half a mile by a couple of miles at the most, and it's highest point can't be much more than thirty or forty feet above sea level.

I was astonished to learn that more than thirty thousand people live there today. Some of these islands are very low-lying, and very crowded.

"Tsunami station in event mode".

My guess is that it's being activated for tsunami purposes.

Listening to live streaming radio from Pago Pago of American Samoa at this exact moment. Lt. Governor of Samoa has given an emergency message on the radio just now, live. They are broadcasting to the Samoan People to not panic, to quit getting on the road if they are not in an area that does not need to be evacuated, so those close to the beaches and low lying areas can get the hell out quick. This is going to hit a few minutes before 9 a.m. Sun up is around 6:20 a.m. It is now about 2:25 a.m there now so about 6 hours or so for folks to get up to higher levels. It is actually rather disturbing to listen to this radio in English. They are playing soothing Samoan music interspersed with announcements in English and Samoan.

They are telling people to be polite and patient at gas stations. I take it, that while they are not trying to panic people, there is panic in American Samoa as we speak. (8:30 a.m. Eastern Saturday)

Here is the NOAA map showing the projected path of highest waves:

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center experts said sea level is confirming that a tsunami has been generated.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that it’s difficult to predict the tsunami wave heights because they can vary but it would a big one.

A potential tsunami threat has been issued from the joint Australian tsunami warning center. This threat is for Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island, New South Wales state and for Queensland State.

"Anyone have any idea why the buoy’s are blinking in Caribbean and Atlantic?" My question exactly?

I have a hunch its sites that they have activated to provide continuous data. Perhaps data from far away sites can help calibrate data from affected sites by providing norms to compare to past normal relationships.

But hey, it reads to me like IRS instructions and for the past 30+ years I never have got the hang of understanding them. Good thing no one else knows what it means.

I’ve been to Tarawa. That number of people have learned to be supported by regular shipments of food, fuel, etc by ship and plane. There is NO high ground there. When we were there twenty years ago the culture was still transitioning from living ‘island culture’ to a city culture.

You heard correctly:

“During an emergency or threat of
disaster Civil Defense information
will be broadcast over local radio and
TV stations. When an evacuation is
necessary these broadcasts may include
information about the location of
Public Emergency Shelters in affected
areas. More information, including
the location of shelters designated for
people with special health needs, and
facilities for household pets may be
broadcast, as well as when volunteers
will be available to open shelters and
direct evacuees to the appropriate areas.
Since public shelters do not stock
supplies, please bring provisions from
your emergency supply kit at home. You
will need at least two days worth of food,
water, and personal items for yourself,
family members, and household pets.
Please review this statewide list of
Emergency Public Shelters and note the
two or three closest to your home. The
shelters are listed by county.”
