being in Alaska and all, I assume you’ve prepared for possible power disruptions and know which things you might “lose.”

If not, FReepmail me. Unfortunately, I’m a veteran of power outages. I used to go through at least one a month.

meh

The President of Chile was just on CNN (and many other tv outlets). She looks heartbroken. Prayers for her and all the people of the south Pacific as those waves march westward.

Maybe that’s what the fellow on CNN was talking about a couple of hours ago- when he said he didn’t believe it.

Even if it’s mistaken and it’s 40 FT- that’s unreal.

Every yellow dot on the chart in post 777 is an island with populations that will be affected by this tsunami. It is not just Hawaii and American Samoa. All of French Polynesia is in the direct path, and then ....

I am heartsick at the devastation that will be done today.

I’m somewhat OK, I have a 5.5kw on the front porch, a 15kw diesel at work that I can use if needed.

temps are not too cold, above zero, highs in the mid 20’s, had a good snow dump, almost 10” a few days ago.

Map for the area of concern, not coming up. Must be inundated with hits even at this hour.

>>>>Dumb question — which shore of Maui is at risk?

>>As the crow flys so to speak, I would say the Road to Hana area. I would think the south side would be protected by the big Island

Using a Great Circle Mapper, going from Constitución to Maui, it looks to me like a tsunami would be moving along a heading of about 290 degrees.

http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=scct-ogg

Looking at a map of the islands,

http://preview.tinyurl.com/ylekwba
(Google maps link)

and visualizing a wave front move through on a 290 degree vector, it looks to me like the SE shore of the Big Island is the major place at risk, along with the SE shore of Maui. The Road to Hana area would look to be parallel to that vector, with the road past Hana being the area more at risk.

Also looking at the map and that vector and wavefront, hopefully Honolulu and Oahu in general would get protected by being in the lee of the Big Island and Maui.

RE: "Tsunami station in event mode"

From your link its showing tsunami stations currently in event mode in the Northern Atlantic?

Is this possible with an event started in the Pacific?

Then you’re in good shape, kiddo. The thing that used to drive me batty was knowing my electric well pump was going to poop out. So I’d run around like my hair was on fire (now THERE’S a visual..lol) filling every object in the house with water. heh

I once went through 7 days with no power in the middle of July. All-electric home, no stores, restaurants, or gas stations open for 50 miles.

Worst flippin’ week of my life.

But you should be fine. Gotta love those rugged Alaskans. LOL ;)

Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean may be partially flooded by the tsunami caused by a massive earthquake in Chile, the evacuation of residents is under way, Chilean President Michelle said on Saturday.

“We have arranged the evacuation of people to higher elevations,” Bachelet said in a message on state TV.

Easter Island is situated some 3,700 km (2,300 miles) from mainland Chile.

The tsunami has already struck Robinson Crusoe Island, the largest in the Chilean Juan Fernandez archipelago, creating extensive damage, according to the president.

Officials have reiterated a warning for the Hawaiian Islands as they are likely to be hit by the tsunami.

The 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit the Latin American country in the early hours of Saturday. The tremor occurred some 89 kilometers (55.3 miles) to the north of Chile’s second largest city Concepcion, some 341 kilometers (212 miles) from the capital of Santiago.

According to the latest reports, the death toll from the quake has leapt to 78.

Earlier, 47 people were reported dead as a result of the earthquake.

Several aftershocks, including one that measured 6.9 on the Richter scale, followed the initial quake.

The Santiago Airport was reportedly closed as the result of the earthquake. Many parts of Santiago and Concepcion are without power.

Some 50 nations have been placed under a tsunami advisory. Areas of concern are the Hawaiian Islands, French Polynesia, Australia, and Japan. Russia’s Far Eastern region was also advised, but local emergency authorities have stated that the region is in no danger.

I’ve been listening the Hawaii News Now.

I want to be sure I heard it correctly...the evac. centers do not have cots, food, water etc. People have to bring that with them and it should be for 7 days?

Somehow I have to be mistaken. A tsunami of the magnitude (40 meter?) will cut power etc. across the islands. I realize the evac. center is only for a few hours, but what about afterward?

Somebody tell me I misunderstood.

“Is this possible with an event started in the Pacific?”

That might be some disturbance and rebound still going on from the earlier quake near Japan.

See what happens when Bush moved everything from Hawaii to his friends in Texas.
