“Is this possible with an event started in the Pacific?”

That might be some disturbance and rebound still going on from the earlier quake near Japan.

Tsunami alert for Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay

Residents have been warned to stay away from beachfront areas on Sunday morning because of a tsunami alert.
The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre issed the warning after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Chile.
The warning urges people not to go to the coastline to see the potential tsunami
Marine areas face the greatest threat, with the potential for dangerous waves, strong ocean currents and foreshore flooding between Point Danger and Double Island Point, Moreton Bay, for several hours from 8.15am (Queensland time) on Sunday.

The first waves are expected after 8.15am at Coolangatta, after 9am at Maroochydore and after 9.15am at Brisbane.
“Boats in harbours, estuaries or shallow coastal water should return to shore,’’ the warning says.
“Secure your boat and move away from the waterfront. Vessels already at sea should stay offshore in deep water until further advised.
“Do not go to the coast to watch the tsunami, as there is the possibility of dangerous, localised flooding of the immediate foreshore.”
For emergency assistance, call Emergency Management Queensland on 132 500.
