After the main quake here in Santiago, the aftershocks were nothing.

Heard on the radio shortly after that it was an 8.5, and couldn’t believe it considering that where I live, in the financial district (think Manhattan), there was very little damage to be seen.

In Santiago, most of the damage was cosmetic, although there have been buildings that didn’t hold up as they should have.

Things are looking much worse in the south, and they’re still working on basic communication, food and water.

Plan on going to work tomorrow, as things seem pretty normal for the most part here in Santiago.

.

Typically humans have always settled along coastlines
Events there can be disasterous but not unexpected

Inland the tornados and big river floods get big headlines but do not kill as many

Yes I know.
I saw that map earlier.
Galveston is still recovering from the hurricane two years ago. All the beach homes on the west end were washed away.
Not allowed to eat oysters from around there because of possible contamination still.

My niece lives in a historical home on the Strand and they are still repairing. At least you know a hurricane is coming and few people are killed.

Anywhere along the Texas coast will affect someone in my family, and it’s a BIG coastline.

Glad you are okay, prayers for all.
What does Chile need in terms of donations?

In 2004 and 3005, there was hurricane after hurricane. Well I'm glad to see we make it past 2012. :-)

(I have a new keyboard today so I will be making less and less typos with every character.)

One wonders who will get the winter Olympics in 3010? One can't ever see enough curling.

They need to start cracking down on looters in the worst way possible (I would prefer shooting...they could shoot them in the leg like The Terminator if killing makes people uncomfortable) just like Charleston, SC did after Hurricane Hugo in 89. The police cheif came out and said they would shoot and ask questions later if they caught looters. Guess what, the looters stopped!

Only in the epicenter is it a disaster (but make no mistake that it is reaching a disaster, especially with the way the people are behaving). As they say, “poor folks have poor ways.”

They are getting regional support with most needed items (field hospitals, bottled water, etc), and Clinton just brought down some 20 sattelite radios which is going to be a huge help (that is not sarcasm).

More is on the way...but I wish the new conservative could take over sooner than the official date of the 11th. He campaigned as being tough on delinquency...I think most people would support a show of power here.

I know people down there, and the looters not only sacked a clothing store, but they also set it on fire (some have suggested that this was done to distract security so they could move on to the next store). The store was one block from where these people I know are living.

A sufficiently large or sufficiently long lasting tsunami tidal bore type wave on top of the usual Mississippi water would have looked to folks of that era in that location as though the river was running backwards imho.

Even if it only stopped flowing south in a stretch of the lower Mississippi, it would be catastrophic today. Many take flowing backwards too literally. It was definitely disturbed and distracted from its normal flow

My point is that a single earthquake has the potential to kill more than every other natural disaster the United States has experienced combined

Well, anything is possible. We could get struck by a comet or large asteroid killing everyone in the U.S.

My point is, hurricanes and tornadoes kill many times more people in the U.S. than earthquakes.

This is just a simple fact.
