A sufficiently large or sufficiently long lasting tsunami tidal bore type wave on top of the usual Mississippi water would have looked to folks of that era in that location as though the river was ‘running backwards,’

Is a quake ever going to kill 100,000 people in the US? No

If the New Madrid quakes occurred in 2011 and 2012 instead of 1811 and 1812, I'd think it might come close. Lots of people live in that area now, and they are not used to earthquakes. Plus if it took out lots of bridges, it might be very hard to get aid to the area, which has lots of rivers and smaller, but still substantial, waterways.

Can someone tell me if this was a 10+ story building that went over on it’s side and then snapped in two when it went over. Notice the buildings side balconies now appear to closest to the sky.

it really appears to be a 10+ story building that completely landed on it’s side and then the top 3 stories broke away from the lower part of the building.

Chili has had a 9.0 and a 9.5 so I assume this is a natural occurrence.

True, this area is just more active in producing biggies than others

I’ve been watching these aftershocks. Scary.

You push a teapot around with a broom. I’m not sure what one has to do to win.

But a large earthquake has the potential to kill more Americans in a single event than have been killed by tornadoes in the history of the world.

Again, I'm not talking about the world. I'm talking about the U.S.

Many times more people have been killed in the U.S. by Hurricanes, and tornadoes than earthquakes.

This isn't even debatable.

Feel free to look it up, it only takes a minute.

I don't disagree, but the US is a young county. My point is that a single earthquake has the potential to kill more than every other natural disaster the United States has experienced combined. Speaking of which, tomorrow is the 100th anniversary of the Wellington Avalanche, the deadliest in the US. Those not familiar with the story may find it interesting.
