The tide is going to go out, way out, and stay that way for a while, some people will say cool. let’s move our chairs closer to the water or go pick up shells..then boom the big wave comes back in and they wash out to sea.

Security and traffic camera shots show the moment when the quake hit Chile in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The 8.8 magnitude quake struck at 0634 GMT about 115km (70 miles) north-east of the city of Concepcion and 325km south-west of the capital, Santiago.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said Oregon’s coastal cities could see waves about a foot or two high arriving this afternoon during low tide. The waves could affect low-lying areas and some beaches.

Higher waves and stronger currents could hit the northern Oregon Coast between 2:30 and 3 p.m., about an hour or more after they arrive on the southern Oregon Coast.

An advisory is not as severe as a tsunami warning and does not require evacuation of some coastal cities and towns.

Hawaii sounded the tsunami alarms early this morning, forcing many people staying in beachfront condos and hotels to move to higher ground. So far, waves reaching about 6 feet high have rolled into Tahiti, but no damage has been reported on any of the Hawaiian Islands.

A tsunami warning has extended all the way from Mexico’s Pacific Coast, up the California coast, into Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, where the final days of the Winter Olympic Games are being held.

The quake hit at 3:34 a.m. Chilean time about 60 miles northeast of Concepcion, Chile. Within three hours, buoys recorded the tsunami wave extending into the Pacific. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said it took about 34 minutes for the wave to travel about 100 miles northeast from the quake’s epicenter.

Nearly 120 people are confirmed dead near the quake’s epicenter. There have been about three dozen aftershocks, with a 6.3-magnitude temblor felt in Argentina.

Earthquake Summary(not sure if posted already)

Tectonic Summary
This earthquake occurred at the boundary between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates. The two plates are converging at a rate of 80 mm per year. The earthquake occurred as thrust-faulting on the interface between the two plates, with the Nazca plate moving down and landward below the South American plate.

Coastal Chile has a history of very large earthquakes. Since 1973, there have been 13 events of magnitude 7.0 or greater. The February 27 shock originated about 230 km north of the source region of the magnitude 9.5 earthquake of May, 1960 – the largest earthquake worldwide in the last 200 years or more. This giant earthquake spawned a tsunami that engulfed the Pacific Ocean. An estimated 1600 lives were lost to the 1960 earthquake and tsunami in Chile, and the 1960 tsunami took another 200 lives among Japan, Hawaii, and the Philippines. Approximately 870 km to the north of the February 27 earthquake is the source region of the magnitude 8.5 earthquake of November, 1922. This great quake significantly impacted central Chile, killing several hundred people and causing severe property damage. The 1922 quake generated a 9-meter local tsunami that inundated the Chile coast near the town of Coquimbo; the tsunami also crossed the Pacific, washing away boats in Hilo harbor, Hawaii. The magnitude 8.8 earthquake of February 27, 2010 ruptured the portion of the South American subduction zone separating these two massive historical earthquakes.

A large vigorous aftershock sequence can be expected from this earthquake.
