The Whitehouse/State Department has already come out and gave their position: there won’t be any of that. This isn’t as tragic as what happened in Haiti, better infrastructure, trained urban search & rescue, better prepared to handle this type of situation.

I just found this little bit of Info, FWIW.

On May 22, 1960, the earthquake that struck Valdivia Chile had a magnitude of 9.5 on the Richter scale. This is the strongest earthquake ever recorded by instruments in the world. On the previous day, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck the city of Concepción which is north of Valdivia.

The second strongest earthquake in the world occurred on December 26 2004 and had a magnitude of 9.3. The epicenter was on the ocean floor near the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia and caused a deadly tsunami in the Indian Ocean.

The third strongest earthquake occurred on Good Friday, March 27, 1964 in Alaska, an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.2 struck Prince William Sound and caused extensive damage in Anchorage

mmmm sorry to hear that. My son has an Ohio friend living near there as well. Her family was contacted by the American Embassy to let them know she is ok. I hope you receive good news as well!

Thank you for your kind words. She heard back from a mutual friend in Santiago that is OK, but she has not heard from Zarella either. The quake was centered just north of Concepcion, where the town of Chillian is located. This friend of my daughter's has been on my prayer card for a year or so due to some physical problems, so I feel especially linked.

(((gulp)))

Those quakes are as scary as one might imagine. Walking on solid ground is something our internal sensibilities take for granted. Having the earth literally move under our feet is very disorienting.

Add to that things falling on our head and "end of the world" takes on an instantaneously real meaning.

Well darn it if you only had only said something like “better consult the Mayans” I would have caught it. Oh well I guess I am an idiot for not getting right away that you were referring to the Mayan calender hoax.

Pacific County officials meeting to assess potential minor tsunami, clam diggers cautioned

Chinook Observer

LONG BEACH, Wash. - The Alaska Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami advisory for the Pacific Coast, including the outer coast of Washington and the North Coast of Oregon. There is no tsunami watch or warning in effect.

The advisory follows an 8.8 earthquake that struck just offshore from central Chile in South America overnight Saturday, resulting in enormous damage there.

A tsunami advisory does not mean a wave is imminent. Because of the great distance between this area and the earthquake source, any impact here is expected to be minimal. As of 8:30 a.m. Saturday, the tsunami center estimates wave height of 12 centimeters at Long Beach at about 2:45 p.m. Saturday afternoon. A height of 27 centimeters is estimated for Cannon Beach. There are about 2.5 centimeters per inch.

The predicted time of the onset of the sea level rise at Westport, Wash., is 2:57 p.m. For arrival times at additional locations visit http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov.

The listed arrival time is the initial wave arrival. Tsunamis can be dangerous for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not necessarily the largest.

Complicating the matter somewhat is clam digging on the Long Beach Peninsula Saturday, with peak digging set for mid-afternoon. Clam diggers should keep an especially close eye on the ocean, as even the minor additional tidal elevation and force could make for dangerous sneaker-wave conditions.

Pacific County Emergency Management said at 9 a.m. Saturday that “no significant coastal flooding is expected to be produced by this tsunami. However, some areas of the coast could experience dangerous currents and surges in harbors and bays. Coastal residents are advised to stay out of the water, off the beach, and away from harbors and marinas. Wave heights and currents are amplified by irregular shoreline and are difficult to predict.”

Pacific County officials were meeting at 9 a.m. this morning to determine what response is needed at this time.

Haiti Aftershocks: Devastated Capital Shaken Again

| 01/21/10

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Two aftershocks has again rattled Haiti’s capital, sending rescue teams scrambling off precarious piles of rubble and already traumatized residents fleeing into the streets yet again.

There are no immediate reports of damage from either temblor. The U.S. Geological Survey has given a preliminary magnitude estimate of 4.9 for one that hit at 11:45 a.m. (1645 GMT) Thursday.

Haiti has been hit by at least 50 aftershocks of magnitude 4.5 or greater since the Jan. 12 quake that devastated the capital.
