'Mitch the knife' eyes 2012 run (Mitch Daniels)
Politico ^ | February 26, 2010 | Jonathan Martin

Posted on 02/26/2010 1:43:39 PM PST by Cheap_Hessian

After months of Shermanesque denials, Indiana GOP Gov. Mitch Daniels’ admission that he’s now willing to consider a White House run has roused his long-standing, if unofficial, fan club.

Republican admirers from Washington, Indiana and elsewhere, hoping to encourage their favorite Hoosier, are out in force to make the case that a balding, blunt, unprepossessing, listed-at-5-foot-7 policy wonk would be a strong contender to take on President Barack Obama. Their shorthand is that he’s the un-Obama. If the country has soured on a charismatic orator who brought glamour but little executive experience to the presidency, the thinking goes, then Daniels could provide the antidote.

“Do we want a president that’s pretty, or do we want one who can get the job done?” is how Anne Hathaway, a former Republican National Committee chief of staff who is now back in her native Indiana, puts it.

At 60, Daniels’s résumé is exhaustive: He’s a Princeton-educated former Senate chief of staff-turned political operative-turned think tank chief-turned Fortune 500 executive-turned White House budget director-turned two-term governor.

And since winning the governorship in 2004, he has practiced the sort of fiscal conservatism that he preached as “The Blade” during his tenure as President George W. Bush’s head of the Office of Management and Budget.

“Mitch is the real thing,” said Nancy Dorn, his deputy at OMB and now the head of General Electric Co.’s Washington office. “He’s a true fiscal conservative.”

“MITCH DANIELS AND ‘ROWDY’ CONSERVATIVES

CATEGORY: Decision ‘08, Decision 2012, Politics, health care reform

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels would be on my short list for presidential candidates if he decided to run in 2012.

Unfortunately, outside of us RINO’s, I would be pretty much alone in that hope. Why this is so says a lot about conservatives and Republicans today.”

“But outside of his home state? Daniels runs into problems because he is actually interested in governing, rather than posing. He wants to get things done rather than hope for failure on the part of the majority as a path back to power. To that end, he has committed the unpardonable sin of working with Democrats in the legislature to pass health care reform, as well as fight the deficit by strategically cutting spending and - another horror - raising taxes.

Somehow, this makes Daniels less conservative than, let’s say, Rush Limbaugh who doesn’t have the responsibility of governing and can afford to posture about evil Democrats because he doesn’t need them to perform his job.”

“He served as Bush’s OMB director and is scary smart. And he doesn’t sound like a tea party patriot in this interview with National Journal”

“Daniels hasn’t had the national responsibility but he didn’t hesitate to raise taxes and cut popular programs to balance the budget. While his health care reforms have been market friendly, the state subsidy to the uninsured would probably be viewed with a jaundiced eye by most movement conservatives. He privatized the state’s tollroads but took the money and funded infrastructure projects.”

“When red meat politics is all you understand, and when you view cooperation with the enemy and any straying from a narrow, ideological worldview as apostasy, you are not going to fathom a character like Mitch Daniels nor ever consider him for national office.”

I don't know how you can say Bolton would be a better fut as VP than a SOS>

Because a SOS is nothing more than someone...usually a political crony.. appointed to the post by a politician as is the case for Ambassador to the United Nations... The only difference being.. especially in this instance is ... there isn't a foreign policy diplomat anywhere in sight with Bolton's capabilities, personal fire... nor his America 1st U.N. last philosophy.

BTW... Who do you feel has superior foreign policy credentials today... John Bolton or... former "presidential" candidate Hillary Clinton... or Barack Obama...or Joe Biden??

I will also add... A V.P.Candidate is always the "Attack Dog" in every presidential campaign... He would, without question verbally rip a brand new one for Joe Biden in a debate.

NOW... Why don't you give me your reasons to the contrary ...

"NOW... Why don't you give me your reasons to the contrary ... "

Because, he is not a political crony, and we need someone to clean up the State Department. Bolton's expertise would improve our foreign relations with our important allies. I am against expanding traditional roles of government and would rather fix/reduce/cut the bureaucracies in place. We need someone to bring the State Department under the control of the president and stop it being a rogue organization.

Mitch worked at Hudson.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hudson_Institute

Hudson was described by US foreign policy scholars John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt as “closely associated with neoconservatives”.[7]

The Hudson Institute is developing programs to propose the political and economic transformation of Muslim nations

Pharmacists for Life Int’l might have a few questions for him regarding Lilly.

You criticized my Bolton suggestion... now you have turned a full 180?? Bolton is a perfect VP candidate... I gather from your about face comment.

Yes... PALIN/BOLTON is a perfect ticket... No cronyism, Fiscally responsible, Party Rogue, and a Common sense America First foreign policy.

Now repeat after me...

PALIN/BOLTON - 2012

info on Lilly. and the prob it might cause for Mitch if he runs. At least he would have some questions to answer.

From 1993 until 1997, Daniels was President of North American operations, and promoted to Senior for Corporate Strategy and Policy at Eli Lilly

I cannot define the neoCons neoconservatives at this time .. cannot be done by me in 3 minute.

A few years ago when Mitch left the WH to run for Indiana Gov. I started thinking he was going for some executive experience and might end up running for Pres.

Ha. Looks like I was right...

“I do like DeMint for Prez.”

I like DeMint but he has to be able to govern and not just talk.

So is everyone a RINO?

In the past week, there isn’t a single, viable conservative Republican that hasn’t been disparaged on this board as a RINO (whatever that means).

Not saying Mitch is the guy, but are we going to weed him out for not being a conservative when he IS a conservative, with 6 years of experience revolutionizing Indiana?
