Can’t say I’m surprised. I’ve read about this history for 20 years.
Those who don’t learn from history are condemned to repeat it.
Maybe you should be surprised that this article aimed at the canonization of a pope, has absolutely NOTHING to say about the pope. Or that 3/4 of the article is about events in the 1990’s ecades after the pope died.
Something happened involving Croatia and the Vatican should have said something and in 1990 a church sheltered somebody, hence the pope was an evil man. Not.
The pope SAVED hundreds of thousands of Jews. The world was on fire. The Vatican was surrounded by Nazi troops. All the nonsensical articles are abut the pope not “speaking out” about something. Priests and nuns were being killed in the Holocaust.
The “history” you have been hearing about is false.
The main accusations in this article against Pius XII and Archbishop Stephinac were comprehensively demolished by the British historian Michael Burliegh, Sacred Causes.
The Ustashi was the only group written up for brutality to prisoners. By the SS. Twice.

I can’t see how you can call this false history. It happened. It was based upon the conflict between Catholic and Orthodox religions. Its factual history. It may be uncomfortable to read reports such as this, but denying their validity does disservice to the truth. Any of these events happening with the least of collaboration of any religion based upon Christ is reprehensible.

Paraphrase: History was revised by Michael Burliegh.
Something to note here that many Croatians, as pointed out in the article, were also liquidated by their own. Many Croatians nowadays employ the apologist tactic when addressing the issue of Jasenovac and the Vatican but can never seem to come to grips with the truth regarding both.
Even though they vehemently defend the Vatican’s actions and attempt to diminish the Ustasha, they are neglecting to acknowledge the fact that the Vatican had a hand in enabling the deaths of their fellow Croatians.
And Bill Clinton is their poster boy.
The false history is the extension of what happened in Croatia to the pope, based on some failure to “speak out”.
You know, I didn’t speak out about what was going on in Croatia, of course I wasn’t alive yet.
Bet FDR didn’t speak out about this sectarian fighting. Just maybe that was because the entire world was on fire and at war, the Vatican was surrounded by Nazis. Little things like that.
Let’s write an article about our grandparents and how they didn’t speak out about Croatia in 1942, don’t forget the US government and all the politicians since. And let’s be sure to somehow criticize our grandparents in the 40’s for stuff this article is talking about that happened in the 1990’s and 2000’s.

Quit being such a Catholic apologist. It gets boring after a while. There is no purity in the Catholic church as there isn’t in any religion. All spoiled by human frailty.
If it’s so boring don’t bother to lecture me about it, being called a “Catholic apologist” is a real yawn.
Once again, the article is an attempt to block the canonization of a good pope over sectarian violence between christians in Croatia when the war was at world, without identifying a single thing the pope did wrong.
The other main argument against the pope is that the Catholic church “failed” to support a political party in Germany that supposedly could have stopped Hitler, which to say the least is a stretch.
It’s sad that a man who SAVED so many Jews is now considered evil by Jews.
I’ll wait for a soul searching article about what jews did to stop Hitler, because they didnt. Many jews made a calculated decision not to fight Hitler because in their previous historical experience their challenge to the Roman Empire had been disastrous. The Warsaw Ghetto is a very notable exception, at the point at which there was no choice and no hope.
Why people are so obsessed with hating this pope who was a good man is beyond me. But the underlying reason is not Croatia.
Look I’m not castigating Pope Pius XII, but to say what more could he have done, is a stretch.
He was the leader of the largest Christian organization in the world. The statement that he helped to save many Jews makes the case that he was well aware of the situation that had engulfed the Nazi ruled world and the atrocities associated with it.
What could he have done? Look back to the early church leaders who were also surrounded by an antagonistic empire. Martyr yourself and announce to the world what you know is going on and shine a light upon a situation the world was choosing to ignore.
