US conservatives prefer Paul to Palin: poll

WASHINGTON (AFP) – A straw poll of US conservative activists saw Texas congressman Ron Paul emerge as the preferred Republican presidential candidate to run against President Barack Obama in 2012.

Some 31 percent of the more than 2,000 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) attendees who participated in the poll voted for the outspoken libertarian.

Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, John McCain's running mate in 2008, came in third with 7.0 percent, some way behind former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney (22 percent), who had won the CPAC poll for the last three years.

There were boos among the crowd as the name of Paul -- a 74-year-old Texan who ran a short-lived presidential campaign in 2008 and is considered unlikely to be a serious contender for the Republican party?s nomination -- was announced.

The headline is journalism at its worst. It's false and extremely misleading. A poll of "US conservatives" was not taken in this case. A straw poll of those attending a CPAC convention was. Two entirely different things.

Well put.

Well then I guess they aren’t actually conservatives. Those view are opposites.

Apparently it’s only 31% of 2,300+ who voted out of 10,000 attendees. So it’s not as bad as it sounded. Still, Myth Romney was a headliner there. I assume he wasn’t invited by the teenagers and tinfoilers.???

Sarah doesn’t scare just the democrats - she scares the establishment GOP - they all have dreams of becoming POTUS - she’s a threat...

She’s also who we need - and the new people the Tea Party is finding - to replace the ‘establishment retreads.”

I don’t want to see the same old candidates - there’s not ONE of them I’d want to vote for.

I’m not certain. Romney makes me nauseous. He’s as phony and slick as they come.

This is a highly misleading headline. "US Conservatives" don't prefer Paul. A minority of CPAC attendees does. Paul repeatedly scrapes the bottom of the barrel in nationwide conservative polls.

...most of the people who took the poll actually thought Paul was either an inventor of a candy bar or part of a singing group.

Indeed, a media spin. They obviously didn’t do their homework. If they had they would know that the CPAC straw poll is easily manipulated. Mitt and Ron paid the way for scores of young people whose job it was to vote for them in the straw poll. It’s a silly way to try to get the jump on other candidates and never does any good in the long run. Leave it to the media to use this poll for their own agenda. As usual they want to pick our candidates.

Neocon stands for neoconservative. “neo” stands for new. If I wanted to refer to “old” conservatives, I would say “paleoconservative.” The difference between neos and paleos is typically thought of as a difference in foreign policy theory, with neos having abandoned the more ancient noninterventionist policy called the Monroe Doctrine, which pretty much said, if the attack is not against US on our own soil, we will do nothing to interfere in other nation’s conflicts, other than diplomatic contributions.

By contrast, neos try to look at the whole array of geopolitical circumstances and weigh whether a foreign intervention might make sense in terms of US interests. If so, the theory goes, we have to find a way to get involved, whether openly or clandestinely, formally or informally, militarily or otherwise.

That’s another point of friction. The Constitution requires a declaration of war, so paelos would say you have to have a formal declaration by Congress before you can make a major commitment of military resources. A neo might be inclined to use a more “creative” approach to constitutional construction to bring about the desired intervention, whether by hook or by crook.

Thus, very often a libertarian will stand on constitutional principle in denying the validity of a specific war, whereas the left will simply deny the validity of all wars by any construction available, constitutional or otherwise. This is rejected as dangerous by self-conscious neos, and is generally confusing to other, less informed observers, because superficially, libertarians and libs can look like they are ending up in the same place. But the driving principles really are different.

Crazy is as crazy does. Just because Obama is worse for the country, does not make Paul any less bad for it.

True, but at least Ron Paul was born right here in the USA, for what that's worth!

No, that is not true.

The fact is out of 10k ppl only 2400 voted in the straw poll and they were mostly students. Students who like the idea of having dope legalized.

Also, Palin was a no show......so that would factor in for her low numbers.

Yeah I’m not sure what “neocons” are either.
Think William Kristol and his Weekly Standard Magazine.
