PM gives in to pressure from Shas ministers, right-wing groups, lobbyists.
The Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron and Rachel's Tomb in Bethlehem will be included on the list of heritage sites marked for state renovation and preservation, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu declared at Sunday's cabinet meeting.
The announcement came following pressure from Shas ministers as well as from Infrastructures Minister Uzi Landau and right-wing groups.
Earlier on Sunday, the Knesset Lobby for Greater Israel planned to visit the cave to protest the sites previous exclusion from the heritage plan, which marks 100 historic, religious and cultural sites for preservation and renovation.
The parliamentarians timed their visit to coincide with the weekly cabinet meeting, where Netanyahu unveiled the NIS 399 million plan, which also includes two hiking trails from the North to the South.
Settlers have protested his exclusion of many West Bank biblical sites, such as Rachels Tomb, Shiloh and Beit El, along with the Cave of the Patriarchs.
The West Bank sites of Herodion, Sussiya and Qumran are in the list. The Prime Ministers Office has refused to comment on the details of the list, but said that it was not finalized and that additions could be made with the help of a special committee that would be created.

I know it irks the Muslim world who contend Jews never were near Israel, but this decision should have been a no brainer.
No kidding. Why should there have been the need for any pressure? WTF is Bibi thinking? Heck, even if he was a Meretz PM, he should name 1,000 different sites and give up those of the least value in exchange for REAL concessions by the Paleoswinians.
What did Bibi say? “Oh yeah. I forgot about that one”?
I have been inside the Cave of the Patriarchs.
It has been usurped by a mosque!
Inside the mosque are the ACTUAL GRAVES of Abraham, Issac(NOT Esau), and Jacob/Israel (NOT Ishmael) and their respective wives, Sarah, Rebbecca, and Leah.
Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem, has a 24 hour armed guard to prevent vandalism from the you-know-whos.
Now how about restoring Joseph’s Tomb? Nothing much, just remove all the burnt garbage and rebuild the canopy, and station some guards around it to prevent such deliberate desecrations in future.
