One of the survivors of Friday's deadly shooting at the University of Alabama in Huntsville said she tried to talk Amy Bishop into putting the gun down.
"The first thing I said was, 'Amy, think about my grandson, think about my daughter," Dr. Debra Moriarity, UAH's graduate school dean and a member of the biology faculty, said today. "I said, 'Amy, you know I've helped you, I'll help you again. It's me, it's me."
"Part of my brain thought she'd go, 'Oh, it's Deb,' and she'd quit."
But Moriarity said Bishop, an assistant professor, never responded. So Moriarity crawled through the open Shelby Center conference room door into the outer office area.
She said Bishop followed her outside the room and leveled the 9 mm pistol at her, then pulled the trigger. But it didn't fire.
With the gun possibly jammed, Moriarity said she scrambled back into the conference room.
Another professor, Bob Lawton, managed to close the door and lock Bishop out, she said. He and Dr. John Shriver then barricaded the door with an overturned table and a small refrigerator.
"At this point, we were worried about her firing through the door," Moriarity said.
Police arrested Bishop without incident outside the Shelby Center a few minutes later. They recovered the gun that night in a second-floor bathroom.
Bishop, 45, is charged with one count of capital murder and three counts of attempted murder. The shooting left three people dead and injured three others.
Moriarity said her actions were no more heroic than anyone else's that day.
"Everybody did stuff," she said. "People were calling 911, trying to help the injured. Everybody that wasn't hurt was helping someone."
Read the entire interview with Dr. Debra Moriarity in Wednesday's Huntsville Times.
I'm sure that's an experience one never forgets.
So sad, but she is lucky to be alive.
Choices with a crazed gunmen on a school campus...
1- “Talk ‘em out of it”
2- Run like hell in a zig zag to confuse
3- Bend over and kiss own ass goodbye.

Here is another interesting article:
“In wake of deadly UAH shooting, experts explain why criminal background checks don’t always work” http://blog.al.com/breaking/2010/02/post_210.html
WOW! Isn’t it LUCKY no one is allowed to carry a gun on the campus! Someone could have actually stopped this nutbar before she killed 3 people. That would have been considered interfering with Bishop’s right to free expression!
>>So sad, but she is lucky to be alive.<<
Angels no doubt on overtime. It is so frustrating to be part of the tapestry of God’s Plan and not be able to see more then a few adjoining threads.
God saved this lady for a reason we can’t fathom. I hope she looks for meaning in her survival and arrives at what He wants.
She’s lucky Bishop didn’t practice stoppage drills when she was at the range.
Forgot:
4 - return fire/shoot on sight with own concealed side arm.
According to a critical incident counselor, the signs were likely there, "but most people don't know what to look for."
Well jeepers, Einstein, if the crazy loon had been prosecuted, tried, convicted, and locked up back in 1986 she'd have had a criminal record for murder, and I think even in Alabama they know how to be on the lookout for that. But the elites of Braintree Massachusetts decided that her mommy's ego had more important things to do, so now three more are dead. Thanks for playing though.
Looks like she just went apesh!t.
20 years ago after killing her brother, she ALSO tried to carjack a passing motorist, and when that didn’t work, she ran to a nearby car repair place and leveled the shotgun at the chest of a mechanic, demanding a get-away car.
A big-time liberal congressman (who was DA at the time) let her off.
We need 2b looking at the connections between her parents and the local big-shots —STINKS TO HIGH HEAVEN.
Guardian angels for sure!
Sure enough, last night I watched as the news outlined her background and suspected "romps" in Massachusetts. Today I read that she was a foaming at the mouth Obama supporter.
Shocker, that.
Had she been a Bush or McLame supporter, and/or a 2nd ammendment advocate you can bet your last devaluating dollar that the press would have beat this story into the ground.
This is an interesting contrast with the other survivor’s statement. Typical of witnesses’ stories differing after high-stress situations.
Connections 25 years ago with the Mass police dept got the whole matter swept under the rug.
“3 blasts in the house” for an accident. B.S. there.
And car-jacking ???
The individual learns that she si above the law at anytime in their life and will repeat that belief.
It is a great failing in our legal system that this Professor Amy is still alive. (And I'm only considering the UAH shootings.) Government and defendant should each get 30 minutes to make their case and then a jury should decide. An appeal could be heard for fifteen minutes the next day if necessary, which would provide ample time to procure some rope.
