Obama hit hard as Bayh bows out

WASHINGTON (AFP) – US President Barack Obama suffered another setback Monday as a fifth Democratic senator, centrist heavyweight Evan Bayh, decided not to run for re-election in dismay at the bitter political climate.

Obama, who reportedly tried to talk Bayh out of retiring, faces a looming Republican resurgence and risks watching strong majorities in Congress crumble in November mid-term elections, and with them his ambitious reform agenda.

With his tearful wife and two sons at his side, Bayh, 54, expressed disenchantment with excessive partisanship in the Congress as he announced his decision at a press conference in the state capital Indianapolis.

"For some time, I have had a growing conviction that Congress is not operating as it should. There is too much partisanship and not enough progress -- too much narrow ideology and not enough practical problem-solving," he said.

"Even at a time of enormous challenge, the peoples? business is not being done."

Democrats expressed shock at the development, seeing it both as the loss of a key consensus builder in the Senate and of a candidate strongly favored to win re-election in Republican-leaning Indiana.

A top White House official said Bayh, who called Obama on Monday morning, was "by nature a governor not a senator."

The New York Times reported that both Obama and White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel tried to convince Bayh to run again, but to no avail.

I'd forgotten about Gore's “snippy” remark, which was a snippy remark in and of itself. It's hard to imagine Bush being snippy; it's such a feminine or perhaps even metro-sexual attribute.

Well, then his nature really sucks. ;') Seriously, what a boneheaded thing for "a top White House official" to say. Thanks NormsRevenge.

Disturbed by the partisanship in Washington? The DIMs have owned both a majority, and for the last year, a super-majority in the congress since 2006. Partisanship aside, the DIMs have only themselves to blame for not passing legislation, the Repubs have been castrated for years.

Exactly, absolutely right. This was my first thought when I heard this story. If Evan Bayh is disturbed by the "partisanship" in Washington, that must be laid squarely at the feet of his own party. The 'Rats have huge majorities in both houses of Congress. The have the Presidency. They have the majority of governorships and state legislatures. They own the big cities. They run most things everywhere.

The 'Rats are the ones in a position to launch bipartisan initiatives and see them through if they wanted to. As a distinct minority, the 'Pubs can't. Obama could be working in a real, constructive manner with 'Pubs every day if he wanted to. But the truth is, Obama and the 'rats don't want to. They want to ram things of their own through and take credit if something good happens. They only want 'Pubs around to blame if something doesn't work out, or give them cover in case it doesn't.

maybe they really do see the writing on the wall....

I’m sure some of them not only see the writing on the wall but also sense that the marxist takeover attempt of our country is going to get ugly.

My humble opinion is: There must be a confidential report from one of the government accounting offices which is projecting that the economy is going to fall off a cliff. These guys don’t want to be in Congress when it happens because there may be neck-tie parties for some of the incumbents when citizens realize how badly our politicians have botched things.

Look, Evan Bayh is a Democrat to his very soul and, in his hearts of hearts he sees what anti-American, socialist/communist/facist POTUS Obama is knowly doing to destroy this nation. He also is smart enough to see that Obama will fail as he already has and, Obama will take the Democrat Party down with him. For months on this site and others, I have been imploring the Democrat Party to force Obama to resign and failing that, to impeach him. To no avail!!!
This insane banter between Joe Biden and Dick Cheney is sickening. Obama is unbalanced and Joe Biden has totally lost his marbles. A good number of us knew Biden was about as dumb as a human being gets, but we never considered him insane, which he is. His attacks on Cheney and Scott Brown could only come from a person that has lost complete touch with reality. Consider the source, Obama who is totally unglued and hopefully, you will get the drift. I suggest the Democrat Party face the real world, less the world they now live in tumbles apart at the seams. Obama and his American hating henchmen must go!!!

I'll bet the conversation with Rahm E was INTERESTING! #$%^@ @#$% @#$ @#$%^& #$%^%$ or we'll @#$%^ ^&*~!@#$%^& @#$%^ you!

Looks like Bayh was REALLY impressed by their argument! Wonder if he answered them with a FUBO! OTOH Actions speak louder than words.

Obama and Rahm Emanuel both tried to convince Bayh to stay in the race.................

Gotta give Bayh a kudo for rejecting the enreaties of these two.

Obama and Rahm Emanuel's actions to date have left the two w/ virtually no credibility.

The Obamination applies his patented voodoo witch doctor "Kiss of Death" to doom the hapless Bayh.

Obama destroys everything he touches: Jobs, the economy, national security, health care, democrat politicians, etc.
