Well, good for us.

I thought we could take the seat anyway, but this means we can spend money elsewhere.

Democrats are in full retreat.

"And yet Blanche is still in ??????"

Her strategy is really quite simple.

Maintain the facade of running while collecting million in donations.

Then, either spend only 1/2 in the lost campaign, or retire shortly before the election...keeping the remaining cash under her LLC...the one she has sole discretion over.

When are Baucus and Ben Nelson up? There’s two more that could use more time to be with their families.

Bayh drew a lot of RINO support so he was able to win 4 statewide elections.

Yes, that is his strength, which made me think he could survive despite current political climate.

It is indeed Christmas in Indiana. :-)

Most of the Republican retirements are running for higher office. Not so with the Ds.

I get what you’re saying...we need enough seats to stop them but not so many as to have to let them put the blame for their failed policies on us in any way, shape, or form, until we can vote Biggie BO out of office in ‘12. (wow, that’s possibly the longest sngle sentence I’ve ever written! LOL)

No brick or zot - in fact I agree with you completely, for those same “Blame Bush” reasons you elucidate. I would like GOP to stop at 49 seats in the Senate, setting us up for 2012. Dums hold (something like) a 24-10 advantage in 2012 seats, so it will be a very target rich environment. When Obummer is being run out of office in 2 years, he will drag a lot of others Dumocrats along on his coattails.

Regarding your suggestions, I don’t trust Illinois to elect a Republican quite yet; and, if Tommy Thompson announces or if it was in Scott Walker’s plans, I’d bump up Wisconsin.

Regarding NY (where I live), if Pataki steps up to take on Gillibrand I would bump up that seat to at least a “maybe”. Also, I spoke with a high-profile NY GOP insider yesterday who surprised me by saying Larry Kudlow is likely to take on Chuck Schumer - if that happens I will bump up that race as well. With the potential of Harold Ford duking it out with Gillibrand, Cuomo taking on Patterson in a primary fight for Governor, and Kudlow taking a real fight to Schumer, NY politics could be exciting this year in a way that precedes my memory!! Bring it!!

I want the Dems to hold the majority in both the House and Senate but with neutered margins.

One reason why winning a majority in the Senate is important:

Holding a Majority on the Judiciary Committee can stop the appointment of Progressives to the Federal bench and the Supreme Court.

Occam’s razor. They don’t think they will win in 2010. The dems dropping out are in districts/states where they don’t have a good chance.

If you can show me examples of dems dropping out in strongly liberal regions, then I’ll give a bit more weight to the notion this is some stealth electoral jiu-jitsu plan.

Remember, should the economy and nat security situation worsen, the impact would barely be felt by protected politicians.

Democrats are so demoralized I bet this fall even their most loyal voters, dead people, don’t bother to vote.

Not a bet I'd take, there's nothing more dangerous than a person (or political party ....) that's been backed into a corner on the verge of defeat. Think about it: There's nothing they wouldn't do to try and stay in power the next election.

The political pendulum in this country swings both ways: when voters see one party in power that's too big for their britches, they tend to 'even things out' by voting the other party in power. We saw that in 1994 and again in 2006. It is rare in the political history of this country though, to see the swing in the other direction happen so quickly ....
