ROME (Reuters) – Tourists took rare pictures of snow falling on the Colosseum and the Trevi fountain on Friday, and the Pope reportedly appeared at a Vatican window to watch Rome's heaviest snowfall in nearly a quarter century.

In scenes usually only glimpsed in souvenir "snow domes" Italy's capital was blanketed in white, snarling road and air traffic but delighting many Romans who rode scooters with their feet on the ground and snapped pictures with mobile phones.

Rome was last dusted in snow in 2005, but one meteorologist said the steady snowfall through Friday morning was the heaviest seen in the Italian capital in 24 years.

"It's very exciting. I have been taking pictures of my husband in front of the Colosseum because I thought nobody would believe me if I told them it was snowing in Rome today," said Margaret Jones, a tourist from London.

We saw a significant amount of snow in Venice last December, which was pretty cool. (No pun intended) However, snow in Rome is very rare indeed.

Macon and Columbus are getting a snoot full, however.

The Democrat/Scientist meme is that this “PROVES” Global Warming is happening.

40 years ago they warned us of an impending Ice Age.

Was that because of global warming too? Why aren’t the warming trends a side effect of Global Cooling?

The precipitation is heavier in the South, but North Georgia is getting it to. The snow extends north through East Tennessee including Maryville at the edge of the Smoky Mountains.

For those who have never been there, Rome has Palm trees - lots of them.

Officially, over 12 inches at the DFW Airport. Dang snow wouldn't stop!

My electricity was out for almost a day. Brrrrr!

Now it's Rome's turn. Al Gore must be getting a lot of frequent flier miles these days!

Snow in Venice (Venezia) can be a lot prettier than the aqua alta (high water) that usually hits in November or December. One early December, I brought a pair of Muck Boots to Italy with me; when I got to Venice, Piazza San Marco was inundated but most shops were open (with a few inches of water) and it was business as usual.

Helped carry a couple of elderly ladies from one scaffold to another. You would think all of the natives would be prepared with wellies or other foul-weather boots but apparently such footwear are a major breach of style.
