Pelosi aide says Dems have a legislative "trick" to pass Obamacare; So why have a summit?
Washington Examiner ^ | 02/10/10 | Mark Tapscott

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's senior health care advisor has told Congress Daily that congressional Democratic leaders have settled on a strategy they believe will allow them to make changes in both Senate and House Obamacare bills, then send a single, revised version to President Obama for signature.

Congress Daily is a subscription-only publication, but LifeNews.com has these details:

"In comments reported by Congress Daily, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s top health care aide Wendell Primus admitted top Democrats have already decided on the strategy to pass the Senate's pro-abortion, government-run health care bill.

"Primus explained that the Senate will use the controversial reconciliation strategy that will have the House approve the Senate bill and both the House and Senate okaying changes to the bill that the Senate will sign off on by preventing Republicans from filibustering.

“'The trick in all of this is that the president would have to sign the Senate bill first, then the reconciliation bill second, and the reconciliation bill would trump the Senate bill,' Primus said at the National Health Policy Conference hosted by Academy Health and Health Affairs.

“'There's a certain skill, there's a trick, but I think we'll get it done,' he said."

The comments from Primus raise an obvious question: Since it is inconveible that Democratic congressional leaders are moving in this direction without the knowledge of the White House, why call a health care summit and challenge congressional Republicans to come with their best ideas when the plan is already in place to use legislative trickery to pass Obamacare?

The most logical answer would seem to be that the summit is part and parcel of a White House/congressional Democratic strategy to distract attention from what is about to happen on the Hill. It's the classic magician's trick of distracting you with the left hand while the right hand does the "trick."

Like everyone else, I’m convinced this is a trap. And seeing that it is liberals setting it, I’m worried that Boehner and crew will show up and be sat down next to a bunch of hand-picked citizens...each with a horrific sob story somehow connected to lack of health insurance (NOT health CARE). They will tearfully confront the Republicans in front of Obama on live television. In that setting, it is possible one of the Republicans says something that will then be easily twisted as to agreement with Obama on a key point or two.

I hope I’m leaping to the worst, but I would put nothing crass, classless or blatant past Obama and the vermin on his staff.

Everything this administration does is a show...and I think the “summit” is a show to try to make the “no-sayers” look bad.

Unfortunately, for them...the no-sayers are doing the will of the people, so it’ll only make this administration look worse, IMO

the Democrats are down to 217 votes, one shy of a majority.

Remember that the House does not operate on the basis of a fixed number of votes required for passage. Instead, the House can pass a bill based on a majority of those attending.

Accordingly, with a total membership of 435 but two vacant seats, there are only 433 Congressmen. If all attend the vote, 217 "aye" votes is all it would take.

The current membership is 255 D - 178 R (433 total). First time around, 40 Democrats voted against Obamacare, one GOP (Cao) voted for it. If Princess Nancy whips just two Democrats who voted "nay" into "aye" votes, she'll have her 217.

At this point, I don't think there is any chance that a Republican votes for it.

The question is how many "Blue Dog" Democrats who voted for the Stupak amendment will stand firm. I.e., how many of them don't want to commit hari-kari.

Call their bluff! If they have the gonads to play their “trick,” then let them do it. Frankly, liberals are at heart political cowards. That is why they try to hide everything that they do. If I were the GOP leadership, I would draw the line in the sand.

Don’t forget that Rep from Alabama (D) who switched to a Republican -

Griffin voted against the bill the first time around. So, his switch won't affect the vote.

Do you think that those who voted No in that climate will vote Yes in the current political climate? I doubt it, unless they are willing to commit political suicide to pass a bill that they soon will be affected by in the private sector.

If true and they take control of our private healthcare in this manner and against the wishes of the people, I say exercising our first amendment rights failed, and it may be time to move to #2.

Obama wants cover for the trickery used to pass it so he can say he tried to make it bipartisan etc

If it passes, we won’t be able to overturn it until 2013, because the President would veto and the most Senators we can get this year is 59 (need 67).
