Ukraine Exit Polls Say Yanukovych Has Won Election

Exit polls from Ukraine's presidential election indicate opposition leader Viktor Yanukovych has narrowly won. Mr Yanukovych is given a lead of 3-5% over Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. President Viktor Yushchenko lost in the first round. If correct, it would be a remarkable comeback for Mr Yanukovych, who was swept aside five years ago by the Orange Revolution. He would be expected to make Ukraine's foreign policy more pro-Russian.

The BBC's Richard Galpin in Kiev says the result would be an extraordinary indictment of the Orange Revolution leaders' failure to deliver on their promises, which has left people deeply disillusioned. Mud-slinging Mr Yanukovych was a presidential candidate in the last election in 2004, which was found to have been rigged in his favour, sparking the Orange Revolution.

Yulia Tymoshenko earlier said she would take supporters to the streets He is now expected to change Ukraine's foreign policy - which has been pro-Western and anti-Moscow. Mr Yanukovych had secured 48.7% of the vote, against Mrs Tymoshenko's 45.5%, according to the National Exit Poll. Another exit poll, by ICTV, said he took 49.8%, against 45.2% for his rival.

The problem is that the Ukrainians have been brainwashed for so many generations by Russians that they do not even know about or believe that their was a Holodomor/Famine in Ukraine in 1932.
Many TV stations there currently carry the Russian propaganda that there was no Famine, that the West and NATO are bad and The Motherland is good

Having so many Russians in your country does not help either in terms of elections to decide .

What I was wondering about, specifically, was that given that neither Timoshenko and Y... are pro-Western — as we were told on this thread — what difference of policy was there between them?

Or was it primarily about personalities and power struggle, like it is usually the case in Russia?

Isn’t anyone who speaks fluent English and is loyal to United States can get American citizenship and serve in US Army regardless of ethnicity?

I bet it is harder since US citizenship is a better prize but still possible for one who want it. Anyway, most of them are not bothered to learn fluent English, to be loyal to America or even to get a passport and serve to his new nation, isn’t it?

Getting Russian citizenship is a lower legue prize but still a challenge. Last time I’ve check they had world’s second largest number of illegals, right after USA.

As I recall, the last election was heavily influenced by foreign money, laundered through various "foundations" set up exactly for the purpose of funding candidates who appear to be in support of [name of country here]'s foreign policies.

If one of 0bama's objectives is to remove American taxpayers' dollars from other nations' election campaigns, I wish him well in that endeavor. I.E., LOL!

I think it is so-called ‘Ukrainian lovers’ who actually don’t have an idea of Ukraine who are brainwashed.
There was a Holodomor and it is a crime against humanity but it has nothing to do with Russians since it was mostly commited by Ukrainian communists leaded by Georgian known as Uncle Joe. Communism is not a Russian invention but a purely Western ideology they were forced into by German spy Lenin and Georgian Uncle Joe who hated Russia. It were Russians like Soljenizin who were their primary victims and it is unfair to pick other victims by ethnicity and falsely call them Russian victims. Communism has no ethnicity and it is not Russian. Ask any Russian nowadays. They are more conservative than neocons and their elections shows it. All the lib or communist parties does have close to zero support.

Communism isn’t about tax rates.

Of course, since communism is about to socialize all the wealth. There is no taxes if there is no individual wealth or income.
But socialism is about taxes. It is about socializing more or less wealth by taking it from people who creates it. It is a soft form and a step toward extreme communism. Taxes is a tool.

NO it’s not—it’s also about spiritual values which I referred to. They have us beat there too.

Russia admires the power the Soviet Union in world affairs, but not their domestic policies.

What you referred to was tax rates.

As for spiritual values, I don’t think anybody can say with authority what is in somebody else’s heart or the heart of a nation. But it does sound to me like you think Russia is better than America, so you may want to consider immigrating there.

Yep, I know all that. Taxes are merely a tool within an arsenal of many tools employed to enforce the ideology. Socialism is a form of communism, which is an ideology, not a tax.

The communist ideology presents a top-down hierarchical social structure, although its practitioners deny the hierarchy. They use all means necessary to enforce compliance, including taxation, during the fascist and socialist phases of the march toward full communism. But taxation in and of itself certainly doesn’t fulfill all the demands for eventually achieving a communist state.
