This news story is about a woman being shot while she was in the shower. Most normal humans would consider having your pistol on your hip while taking a shower to be paranoid, delusional, or a lie.
Hence, get a large dog. Large dogs are great for real security as opposed to mindless Internet macho-blather.
A large dog will typically give you the 4 seconds that it can take you to retrieve your firearm.
In this manner you don't have to wear your pistol on your hip while taking your daily shower.
Everyone seems to be missing the obvious solution. We should all start taking baths with large dogs and loaded weapons within reach of the tub. Problem solved.
Lather, rinse, aim, repeat...
Cheapest, simplest solution?
Take a bath. You can be vigilant while the tub fills, then, when the faucet is off, you can hear things around you.
“Large dogs are great for home security and deterrence.
Even a small, noisy dog is helpful. They’re also more fun than an alarm system.”
We have a Great Dane and a Chihuahua as part of our home security package.
South Florida is becoming a suburb of Chicago!
Lowes has a Zenith Indoor/Outdoor Motion Alert System for around $60. It has outside lights that come on and an indoor, wireless, doorbell sound. Number on box is SH-6040-WH.
With the economy as bad as it is, and getting worse, it is important to not wait until home invaders are busting through your doors.
In the military, it is called a “layered defense”, but the same rules apply to those who wish to live unmolested by criminals and criminal gangs.
To start with, uniformed police have some purposes, but some serious limitations, that are important to be aware of. The first of these is that there are far too few of them to be proactive—to stop crimes from happening, or catching them in progress.
On the plus side, once they are notified, they can usually respond within 15 minutes. So this is the “outside” of your timetable against crime. If you can hold out for 15 minutes, the cavalry are likely to show up. And they will take over the fight from you, once they know that you are one of the “good guys”.
The next level in the layered defense is a neighborhood watch, which just means neighbors who will pay attention, and help you out when needed. They are in the 5-10 minute timetable, once a ruckus has started. And this is very personality oriented. Conservative young people are far more likely to help out quicker than retired old hippies.
Finally, there is home defense, which have some pointed out includes burglar alarms, home defense plans, dogs, and self defense weapons for the whole family.
“What is your standard shower gun? lol”
Mine is a stainless steel wheel gun, strategically placed. A bathroom is the ideal low budget “panic room”, all you need is a solid door, a good lock. a firearm and cell phone. The tub also provides some protection, if it fiberglass you can put steel plate in front of it and box it in.
“I try to keep the house locked at all times, but the noise of the shower covers up most external sounds.”
I try to keep a reasonable perspective on these things. How many times has your house been broken into? How many times has your neighbors homes been broken into? If the answer is not many, I dont worry about arming myself for the 15 minutes a day I’m in the shower. If the answer is “all the time”, I’d get an alarm, a big dog, or better yet, I’d move to a better neighborhood.
A GLOCK will work when wet.
I would suggest the Heckler & Koch HK416. It will fire immediately after being doused in water with no danger to the user. Awesome weapon.
I recommend you do not place it in proximity to your hairbrush or blow dryer. :-)
Red in Blue PA must have the filthiest waist on the State. ;-)
“Any suggestions for an old geezer?”
This ole geezer uses high tech. On my farm, I am all fenced in with barbed wire, and have a driveway entry detector. In my shower I have an overhead light. I just hatched the idea of having the detector flash (turn of and on) the shower light if driveway entry occurs while showering. It will at times false detect from birds playing, etc. but this happens maybe twice a day so the chance of a false during a few minute shower is virtually nil.
Where there is a thread there is a solution!
“So heinous crimes do not occur in nice neighborhoods?”
Its all about probablilties. I’m not saying it can’t happen, but its much more surprizing when it does. If it was just as likely in a bad neighborhood, why spend the extra money to live in a good one?
