This story is Exhibit A of why.
The story is so short on details but ...
If she was showering when they confronted her and they shot her through a shower door then no firearm that she kept in the house would have made a difference. Just bad timing.
I don’t have a gun at my side when I choose to shower. Maybe I should!
What is your standard shower gun? lol
They make stainless steel guns for a reason.
I’m beyond lucky in that my wife teaches other husband’s wives to carry. And she watches MMA fights with me instead of the Oxygen network.
I think I need more coffee. I read it as “homeowner” being a husband who was showering.
Large dogs are great for home security and deterrence.
They can also generally live long enough during a home invasion to give you those needed 4 seconds to retrieve your firearm.
“What is your standard shower gun? lol”
If you want a real laugh read the Defensive Carry forums. That place is full of hypervigilant paranoids who shower and sleep with their guns. Many wont use a urinal for fear of being attacked from behind. Actually its not funny, its pathetic.
She was in the shower when they entered the home. Should we carry in the shower?

My mistake.
What kind of FReeper are you? Next you're going to tell us you don't have tan lines from your pistol belt?!?!
Lol.... And the rest of us aren’t even checking to see who made the requisite joke before we did....
Very unusual for HI perps to just break in and start shooting. Money and/or drugs is my suspicion.
Thankfully, the kids weren’t harmed.
This is an interesting problem. I live on a farm and I am a little ansy about showering at times. I try to keep the house locked at all times, but the noise of the shower covers up most external sounds. A big, aggressive dog sounds like the best bet until I could get to my shotgun.
Any suggestions for an old geezer?
It's alright to be paranoid for the safety of your family, I worry less about someone assaulting me as I'm a 6'3 280lb gorrilla. But her with two kids in tow is an obvious target. Been a rash of crimes lately with scumbags targeting women early in the morning while shopping, the attacks taking place in the parking lots while women are trying to load groceries in the car. Broad daylight. Just FYI.
Even a small, noisy dog is helpful. They're also more fun than an alarm system.
Dogs or shotguns? Dogs, any breed that barks will work. :)I'm partial to the German Shepards or labs. But even lapdogs can alert you to someones presence.
For shotguns, well everybody has their favorites. But any pump or auto will work, no need to go hi tech. $300 or less will suit you fine. Remingtons, Bennellis, Berretas, Mossberg...just pick which one you like best and can easiest afford.
