Newser) Moderate Mark Kirk has won Illinois Republican Senate primary, blowing away two conservative opponents backed by tea-party contingents. The congressman has 56% of the vote with more than 82% of precincts reportinggiving him a 37% lead over Patrick Hughes. Analysts predicted that a clear Kirk victory would take much of the steam out of the tea-party movement.
On the Democratic side, the Chicago Tribune reports, state treasurer Alexi Giannoulias looks close to clinching the nomination, setting up a fight with Kirk for the Senate seat vacated by President Obama.

I lived in Cook County for 32 years. If you could take it off the map, Illinois would be the most conservative state in the country. And if pigs had wings..........
Two things come to mind:
1) The Tea Party movement wasn’t as involved in this one.
2) Fine, let the rinos finance this campaign. Get them to motivate the base. We’ll see how that goes.
I wonder which candidate the RNC backed.
What happened is Chicago. The atypical dome of the MidWest!
I really don’t care much to go over the border. Your dealing with decades of indoctrination and a whole different mentality. Look how much they are taxed in the city. Look at the hikes done on all the tolls around the city. There’s been no anti-movement gaining ground on even these issues, I’m not too surprised by the outcome with these elections. The lemmings take it gleefully.
Amen. The RNC has been calling and calling me. Do not give to the RNC. Target your money directly to the conservative candidates of your choosing.
“Massachusetts is better than Illinois?”
Scott Brown isn’t a Conservative by any reach. He is pro gay marriage, pro abortion, pro gun control and a global warming believer. He did adopt some things the Tea Party stood for like no Obamacare, cutting spending and lowering taxes. But his not a conservative and never realy ran as one.
To prevent duplication, please do not alter the title. Thanks.
Kirk has been running for this seat more or less for 10 years. He never intended to end his life in the House. He had name recognition and no one else in the field did.
Agreed. If this had happened in UT, OK, AL or GA, I would be concerned. But IL & MA? No big deal. Take what you can get.
Analysts predicted that the Titanic was unsinkable.
Well in the past he hasn’t had any problem with it. He did vote against Obamacare in the house but he’d taken considerable flack for his CAP and Trade vote where he was one of 8 Republicans that deserted ship. Previously he had voted with Democrats to override President Bushs vetoes of the SCHIP program and voted for an expansion to Medicare (both expansions of government control of healthcare and severely fiscally irresponsible bills).
This guy makes Susan Collins and Olympia Snow look conservative. He is the political reincarnation of Lincoln Chafee or Christopher Shays. The important thing is that we don’t need his seat and we don’t need the idea that some how we need more liberal Republicans to win to become the overriding idea and you will bet if this guy wins Obama’s old seat that is what you are going to hear. It really makes the Tea Parties look like they are powerless and big government Republicanism is on the rise again.
He’s a disaster for sure but there is good news in the 9th and 10th House districts and governor and lt. governor.
1) Open Primaries
2) Uneducated voters
3) Cook County
4) Millions of dollars in ads promoting Kirk as "fiscal conservative" (This one closely associated with #2)
5) Uneducated voters
So it's 2 unprincipled scumbags squaring off. Illinois business as usual.
We can't expect that running off the Devil will be easy.
It never has been and never will be.
If elected we just have to work to make sure his colleagues are so drastically different from him that even he recognizes how foolish he is calling himself Republican and acting Democrat.
We don't need any more Arlen Spectors.
Kirk is a progressive Republican.
:His victory would put a dent in the tea party panic gripping the GOP, says Talking Points Memo” http://www.newser.com/story/79885/illinois-primary-could-muffle-tea-party-buzz.html
Basically then there are two Dem-RATS running for the seat. Doesn’t really matter which one wins, altho it’s probably better to keep the enemy out of your Party rather than in.
Too bad Burris isn’t running....at least he’s good for some comic relief.
Looks like george bush.
