Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the powerful Senate Armed Services Committee, opened hearings on the militarys Dont Ask Dont Tell policy by calling for the repeal of that policy and for gay and lesbian soldiers to be allowed to serve openly. The Lansing State Journal reports:
Opening a hearing on the Dont Ask, Dont Tell policy on gays in the military, Michigan Democrat and Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin said its time to repeal what he considers a discriminatory policy that hurts military effectiveness.
I did not find the arguments used to justify dont ask, dont tell convincing when it took effect in 1993, and they are less so now, Levin said
Thousands of troops 13,500 by one estimate have been forced to leave the military under the current policy, Levin said. Certainly that number includes many who could help the military complete its difficult and dangerous missions.
It looks as though repeal of this policy is inevitable. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, a Republican holdover, is firmly behind the change. And over the last 17 years, dozens of high ranking military officials have likewise come out in favor of allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly.

From one angle it looks like Senator Levin has “come out” himself. However, that would be wrong. His interest is sexual sadism ~ which he undoubtedly enjoys to the degree possible. Otherwise, he’d realise a relaxation of the current policy will simply lead to more folks of the sort who sexually abused the prisoners at Abu Ghraib trying to enter the military.
What in blazes does Carl Levin know about anything...let alone this issue?
Putz.
After putting a goodly portion of their voters in the PO’d column after stimulus, cap & trade and ObamaCare, they are trying to reel back in their fragmented, bought-and-paid-for, fragmented hodge-podge of a compilation of a base.
When is Debbie up. And she is not Little Debbie any more.
Ahhh, I can hear it now . . . the embellished history of the mighty Fighting 69th - Charge of the Fudge Packer Brigade. A unit of Fighting Fairies in the Airborne ranks. . . .
Imagine what kind of coverage they will get in the selected revisionist history books compiled for our unsuspecting children in public schools. . . . disgusting . . . once again, Rats putting our national security at risk for political purposes.
Well, fur shur, it’s a problem he toys with.
With any luck the idiot will croak before then.
I personally don’t know why they think it will help. It just further solidifies their opposition. Gay activism isn’t a winning issue.
Obama is taking the easy road by addressing the gay agenda. It doesn't require him to balance a budget!!!!
He is making a mistake. His focus on Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is just another indicator that he doesn’t get it.
Obma driving another nail in the coffin of the US.
Look at the stupid things this man has done. No one can be that stupid. It is a conspiracy by a Muslim traitor to destroy America, and the Democrat party is in it with him.

I say repeal it too. Back to what it was. The military should not be some kind of BS social expirament.
This may be the best arguement I have heard. VERY well stated.
Question: Does anyone know of any studies that would support the theory that gays in the military would increase casualties?
What would Levin know about homosexuals in the military? To the best of my knowledge, he has not served one day in uniform.
“Its Cloward-Piven Strategy, military branch.”
Exactly.
That is the precise reason homosexuals should not be allowed to serve in any branch of the military!
Furthermore, women should not be allowed to serve in ships or combat units for the same reasons.
You can take this to the bank (or the Court Martial): Sex in the ranks (Officer or Enlisted - makes no difference), be it hetero or homo, has a serious negative effect on morale and unit cohesiveness.
You are precisely correct: Social engineering has no place in the military.
The military exists to kill people and break things in pursuit of National Defense objectives. Degrading that primary purpose with social engineering stunts puts our military and our country at grave risk, and should not be allowed.
