Shaken by polls showing Republican Scott Brown surging in the Senate race that could decide the fate of President Obama's agenda, Democrats on Friday scrambled to shore up the battered candidacy of Martha Coakley, the state attorney general whose once-commanding lead appeared to vanish in the space of two weeks.
The White House announced that Obama will campaign here Sunday. Former president Bill Clinton broke away from promoting Haitian relief to rally the Democratic faithful, which polls show has taken a victory by Coakley as much for granted as analysts say her campaign clearly did.
Both candidates announced plans to barnstorm the three days before Tuesday's special election. Brown will mount a bus tour; Coakley will place her hopes on a recast stump speech unveiled at the rallies with Clinton.
Striving to redefine the race with a message of compassionate populism evocative of Edward M. Kennedy, whose death created the vacancy, Coakley emotionally told of the struggles of a young mother seeking health care, an ice cream parlor owner unable to expand his store, and a construction worker who needs work to afford the medicine to keep his wife's breast cancer in remission.
"That is wrong," Coakley said after each story. "And that's why I'm going to go to Washington and fight for Stephanie . . . Vince . . . Jim and his family."
The fundamental dynamic of the race fell in place months ago, when Brown set off in a pickup truck for the only campaign the Republican could afford: retail, door-to-door. The campaign was so strapped for cash that aides described the $40,000 spent in the primary as a major hit. Brown could not afford to mail out absentee ballots, often so crucial in a close race.

And those of you who live in Mass PLEASE volunteer to monitor the polls!
And Barry ain't exactly Mr wunnerful either.
Chicago Olympics - response, Bite me.Right now Barry is so toxic if he endorsed Mayor Daley for something, Daley would prolly lose!
Globular Warming Confab - response, Bite me.
The MSM is scrambling to get the "it had nothing to do with Obama" narrative in place in case Coakley loses.
In August, Ted Kennedy, the Lion of the Senate, the last son of Camelot, the soul of the Democratic Party, friend of the people and scourge of robber barons, fat cats and special interests, departed this mortal coil.
What a crock of shiite! The drunken SOB was a Fat Cat - and not physically. Special Interests were his piggy bank and his father was the Robber Baron of Robber Barons. And a friend of 'the little people', HA! The only little people he was friendly to were *maybe* his servants.
But he was the 'soul of the Democratic Party', that's a fact -- Dark, evil, mean, cruel and hateful. And this 'soul of the Democratic Party' is currently burning in HELL, in the special 'Kennedy Wing' Satan had to build for the entire family.
Now, as to this Coakley broad, she's a typical female RAT pol.
Ugly and STOO-PID™. She's dumb as a stump with the personality to match.
[No offense to stumps meant.]
People in MA are finally seeing these thugs for what they are.
Someone needs to tell ol’ Bill that the Republican Party was born in MA, essentially with the Adams family. Abuse of power is Coakley dragging her feet to do anything about corruption in her own party, of turning her back as they keep her in office. THAT IS WHAT WE ARE FIGHTING, BILL!!!
I'm afraid I have to agree. The democRats are going to do whatever it takes to keep this seat.
If 90% of the voters vote for Brown, Coakley will still manage to come out ahead when the votes are counted. As the famous "community organizer" Joseph Stalin said, "He who votes decides nothing; he who counts the votes decides everything."
I hope I'm wrong.
It’s still hard for me to wrap my mind around the idea that the Dems are about to lose the “sainted” Ted’s seat. And largely it’s on account of an issue that Kennedy championed. It is a true perfect storm of a bitch slap to Obama.
WOW! A truer line if I ever read one.....CAN I borrow it?
” and after we do what we all have to do and reelect ‘ol Kennedy to the Senate...we’re gonna reeelect Bill Clinton to
de delect toorec dedoo dedit toodoo.”
Thanks for the ping.
According to people “on the ground” making phone calls, even the Dems are going for Scott Brown.
I agreee
I was wrong! I was wrong! I was wrong!
Does it always feel this wonderful to be wrong? I will have to try it again someday. ;-)
