AUSTIN – ESPN college football analyst Craig James says he will fight the "welfare state" that Democrats in Washington are promoting, though he's not yet sure if he'll run for office or simply become a highly vocal citizen.

The former SMU star running back, speaking before an audience of conservative lawmakers in Austin, said he knows one thing: He can help the GOP by stirring young people to oppose what he dubbed reckless spending by Democrats.

"All this stuff is going to land right in their laps," James said, delivering a keynote speech at a policy orientation for state legislators conducted by the Texas Public Policy Foundation, a conservative group. "Their grandkids are going to have to pay it back."

James declined to directly answer reporters' questions about whether he wants to run for U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison's seat.

After this court case James will look awful. He is a political liability right now. I am glad he was exposed. He is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Yeah right. Your son has a better chance of starting on Mike Leach’s next football team than you have becoming a Senator from Texas.

Hard to run for high office when people snicker when your name is mentioned...

Craig James is delusional...hell he couldn’t run for dog catcher and win in Texas after making an ass of himself in the Texas Tech fiasco. .....and after Leach’s suit hits the courts it will get worse for him!

If the stories of him trying to use his “influence” to further his son’s career are true, then he sounds like the sort of elitist we don’t need here in Texas.

I would say that James is probably toxic throught the Big 12 community. With four Big 12 schools in Texas, he would be toast.

The other thought is that he thinks Perry is going to win and Kay Bailey is going to stay in the Senate. Remember she was going to resign to run for Governor and then pulled back. Kay Bailey is not up for reelection until 2012. She is in Class I and Class III is up for election in 2010.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say he’ll have a tough time getting votes in West Texas and the Panhandle.

James has always been told he was great ... and he believes it.

He was a big shot at Houston-Stratford H.S.,
He was a big shot at SMU,
He was a big shot in the NFL going to the Super Bowl with the Pats,
He is a big shot at ESPN,
He was a big shot as a Tech alum.

He THINKS he is a big enough, big shot to become a US Senator but he is DEAD WRONG. He has an elitist, entitlement mentality. Always has, always will.
