He may be a crank, but hes consistent in his crankery. Anywhere theres human misery after 9/11, after Katrina, even after Ariel Sharons stroke Reverend Pat will be there to explain to the victims why they deserved it. (And hes not the only one.) Hes taking a beating on Twitter right now for having said this, including/especially from Christians who dont want to see the faith smeared by his latest Old Testament thunderbolt theory. No worries there: Other Christian leaders, starting with the Pope and Franklin Graham, are taking a more New Testament view. But even conceding that he doesnt speak for most Christians, he does still command a sizable following, no? Even after years of barfing up stuff like this.
If youre wondering what the pact with the devil is all about (fact check: roughly 95 percent of Haitians are Christian), Tapper has some quickie background. Tongue-in-cheek exit question from MKH: According to the Harry Reid standard, shouldnt Robertsons charitable works absolve him from any and all offensive utterances?
Being kind is a very Christian thing to do virtually regardless.
There is a time to step back and let God have at an individual or group or situation.
Pat has been taking tons of food and needed stuff to Hati for well over a year.
Pat has been personally generous to the hurting virtually all his adult life.
I don’t know that he’s said a single untrue thing about the Hatian situation.
Cram it Clownie.
Robertson’s commentary was innapropriate and he always says crap like this when a mass of humanity suffers.
He wants to make God responsible for their deaths and God doesn’t work that way.
Earthquakes, like shit, happen.
Did you not read the title of this thread?
What proof, other than anectodotal comments from 1804 is there that Haiti made a pact with the devil?
Too many form a belief on so called VooDou based upon movies and TV shows instead of actually researching.
Pat made the claim and what does he have to back it up?
Ever hear of “bearing false witness?”
But we must remember, in spite of the pretty song..."this is not my Father's world."
Time will tell
spewface.
I gather you have not read the documentation posted at post
#156.
Facts are stubborn things.
You, you have some white stuff on your chin, there below your lip.
Yeah.
My beard and mustache have been white a long time.
LOL. Truce.
OK
I take you too are a bigot who accepts whatever some preacher says.
Yes, facts are stubborn things and anecdotal comments are not facts.
Funnier yet in those “facts” is the claim of the “iron pig” dedicated to this alleged pact that is readily seen in Port Au Prince, yet no one has a photo of it nor can it be found.
Stop getting your information from movies and television dramas.
Then, maybe spend some time learning what VooDou actually is.
I have to humbly disagree with that theory. My main reasons why it cannot be legit is that it would make God very callous, and not only that but also very capricious. The latter is the main issue, because if He wants to punish the evil then he would have a very scatter-gun way of doing so.
For instance, look at the disasters you have listed. Thailand is indeed a den of fornication, but that is in the main city. The people affected by the earthquake (and its various effects) were not there (most couldn't even afford to go there), and many were children. Going down your list ...e.g. to use San Francisco ...if it was the gays who were hit then I'd have to say you were up to something. But a minivan getting crushed with kids inside who probably thought 'gay' still means happy? Or in Haiti ...sure, it is one of the places where voudoun is a literal religion ....but most people are Christian. Thus, if God was not willing to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah if there were a few righteous people in it, why would He decide to kill tens of thousands (including I am certain a number of born again Haitians)? After all, He Himself said He is not a respecter of persons ...thus a born again Haitian and a born again American are EXACTLY the same in His eyes ...His children, born and redeemed by the Blood of Christ.
Thus, that schtick of 'God smote em' is just pure cr@p!
What happened is that Haiti was hit by an earthquake caused by tectonic events. In much the same way that car crashes in Oklahoma right now are due to black ice and snow conditions ...not because some angel or demon decided to reduce the friction coefficient of tires in Edmond Oklahoma to zero!
The people who say 'God punished them' after a disaster remind me of Global warmers who claim 'the dust storm in the Kalahari is due to the polar icecaps melting' etc. Maybe the dust storm in the Kalahari desert was due to wind conditions in the Kalahari desert and not to do with polar icecaps, and maybe the earthquake in Haiti is due to tectonic dislocation and not because God thought of killing tens of thousands of Haitians because a pig was sacrificed to the devil ages back!
The sad thing about those who say 'God did it' is because their theory can be applied to anything. Every single city, town and nation in the WORLD has a section that is not holy enough for them, thus any disaster ANYWHERE in the world can also be attributed to God smiting them. If New York is destroyed tomorrow it will be because they were too liberal and sin loving. Utah because they are Mormons. Vatican city because the Pope is Catholic. Billy Graham because his son (who is now a preacher after his father's - both Billy and our Heavenly Father - heart) once used to be a sinner who disobeyed some decades ago. Every single disaster can be attributed to God's punishment.
I am not saying God cannot punish ...he can and does. However, God is also love, and to me even an event like the Sodom and Gomorrah story shows God's love (how he was willing to let the towns survive even if there were as few as ten people there who were holy).
BTW ...wasn't there a hurricane once in Florida that hit some property belonging to Pat Robertson? I remember that quite well. I guess that means Pat is being 'punished' as well, and thus should not be making any comments. Also, his ministry does some work in Haiti, building some health centers ...which were invariably hit. I guess that is 'punishment' as well, isn't it?
May God help the people of Haiti, and keep all the rest of us safe.
Re: Ayn Rand...
Atlas Shrugged and Haiti had an earthquake. Looks like Detroit.
Robertson may be criticized for having a tin ear and a lousy sense of timing. He can also be criticized for not understanding a key to God’s nature: God doesn’t do these things; those who are not under His covering are SUBJECT to these things; they’re fair game to the Enemy.
All that said, to call him “immoral”, etc. is simply silly. Compare what that man and his organization have done all over the world for decades to anyone else; ANYONE else.
Once you’ve done that, then come tell me and the other readers here just how “immoral” Pat Robertson is.
It’s funny how you find nothing wrong with his timing.
The People of Haiti made a pact with the Devil? Which ones? When? All of them?
Was it their ancestors who, wanting their freedom from the French made that pact? How are these people stained by something they had nothing do with and happened generations ago i.e. some 200 years ago?
God does not punish here on earth and that’s a fact. He has set a natural order of things. Does he intervene for mercy? Sure.
But, Pat’s focus everytime there is a disaster is to pretend that God is punishing them for some High Sin.
Does Pat now have some special dispensation or imprimature from God to judge others?
Is it necessary to pile onto to a people who are desperate and looking for hope?
Is God a spirit of hope? Shouldnt’ these people be given hope and a promise from God of salvation?
Which should come first water, medical care, shelter, food or condemnation for sin?
It is just plain stupid and Immoral during a time of human tragedy to place blame on some story that is not actually confirmed. Further it does nothing to advance your objective of leading souls to Christ.
In fact, it causes resentment for a condemnation on the one hand and helping hand on the other.
“You have committed a great sin and that is why this happened to you and why your family and friends are dead, dying or injured. I will, however, have mercy on you and provide care but you have some serious thinking to do”
That is his pitch and it is crap.
What he has set up is a message of condemnation and once this is over, there will be plenty of deaf ears for resentment he caused.
How does that bring anyone closer to light and God?
The approach, at a time like this, should be on delivering comfort, a hopeful spirit and help. You can set up a missionary program and a more grateful people would be receptive to your message.
I understand your defense of him and his “good works” but it comes at the price of marginalizing dignity and pride, of a desperate people who will not listen to his message.
That just is not an effective approach.
I’m not saying Pat Robertson is right, but what about these Bible verses?
(Exodus 20:5) - “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,”
(Deuteronomy 5:9) - “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,”
(Exodus 34:6-7) - “Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; 7who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”
Sorry for my screed which you have no doubt read by now. I did not read the first paragraph of your response.
It is just unfortunate that he always does this.
Pat has helped a lot of people around the world and I believe he is a good man. It’s just that at times like this he makes us look kooky and causes resentment, while slowing down what is necessary and should be the priority:
Caring for the human condition.
Let’s pray for these desperate people.
Anyway, post on.
