AFL-CIO leader: Democrats inviting repeat of 1994 over economy woes By Kevin Bogardus - 01/11/10 01:01 AM ET
The Democratic Party could see a repeat of their epic electoral defeat 1994 when Republicans won the House unless they institute dramatic changes in economic policy, the leader of the AFL-CIO said Monday.
In prepared remarks at the National Press Club, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said the majority party needs to end its coziness with the financial sector and step up and take action for workers to avoid losing control of the House.
In 1992, workers voted for Democrats who promised action on jobs, who talked about reining in corporate greed and who promised health care reform. Instead, we got NAFTA, an emboldened Wall Street and not much more, Trumka will say, according to the remarks. NAFTA is a reference to the North American Free Trade Agreement with Mexico and Canada.
Union leaders got behind Democrats in 1994 despite their disappointment, but were unable to motivate their members to get out the vote, according to Trumka.
There was no way to persuade enough working Americans to go to the polls when they couldnt tell the difference between the two parties, he will say in the remarks.
Politicians who think that working people have it too good too much health care, too much Social Security and Medicare, too much power on the job are inviting a repeat of 1994.

He must be getting hammered by the rank and file. My sister is in a union and has left the Democrats cold.
Riiight... because Democrats are not Socialist enough !??
They should socialize things faster and turn over more economy to the unions. What a crock.
Or maybe the Union Bosses are realizing that in real Socialism the gavernment replaces the Unions. Without Capitalism there is no need for a Union. Wonder when the Lawyers will figure it out? Obama is the real thing.
Union workers with good (”Cadillac”) health care are going to be annihilated by Obama care.
You know it’s a crock, I know it’s a crock, anyone with common sense knows it’s a crock... but the more the unions spew this crock at the Community-Organizer-in-Chief, the sooner we will be rid of him.
We won both Houses of Congress.
Peter Jennings' jaw dropped in disbelief.
He kept looking at the voter map and back at the camera, shaking his head.
Brokow and Matthews and Couric, oh my!!
“We won both Houses of Congress.”
We may very well do it again if Steele does not get in the way.

Thats the way I read this as well.

One of the greatest ironies in the decline and fall of labor unions in this country is that labor leadership, itself, has been the most responsible for their decline. For over 70 years labor’s leaders have supported Democratic politicians and policies that have promoted an activist government. Throughout most these 70 years, labor unions have gotten much of what they’ve demanded—a progressive government that has increasingly taken on the role of “Labor” in the workplace.
From the government’s own Department of Labor, to the EEOC, to OSHA—to any number of federal (and state) agencies governing the workplace environment, Labor and their Democrat brethren have created a government that has basically made labor unions redundant and less relevant. The very success of labor unions in advancing a progressive agenda via government and “worker’s rights”, has helped contribute to their own decline and fall. When you combine all this with the union leaders corruption and heavy-handed tactics, is it any wonder that unions have lost much of their power and influence in this country.
One of the other great ironies in this decline is that since so much of our unions rely and revolve around a strong manufacturing/industrial economy, it has been many of these same progressive Democrats that have helped destroy this base. Contrary to claims of Republican’s being responsible for outsourcing US manufacturing, it has been Democrats who have thoroughly waged war on our industrial nation.
Whether it’s the punitive tax policies (one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world), liberal environmentalism combined with excess regulaton...or outrageous litigation supported by liberal politicians, Democrats have become increasingly hostile towards industry and business in this country. Both union leaders and their Democrat bretheren have been directly responsible for the fall of unions—and those businesses that have helped enpower them.
Translation: We bought the Democrats. We Own the Democrats. We paid all of their bills while they were wandering aimless for 25 years in the wilderness. When they won last November they were obliged to do our bidding, but they are proving to be just a wee bit sluggish on their puppet strings. Time for us to attack with a vengeance.
Was that when Brokjaw said the American people threw a temper tantrum.
I can`t believe the AFL-CIO thought they were gonna be able to keep Obama under control
Greedy pub-sector union protectionist racketeers. They’ve ‘Got theirs,’ screw the rest of us in the private sector.
Hand over the loot for our stable endless massive bennies, taxpayers.’ that’s their motto.
Sounds like the rats are infighting. heh heh
“...working people”!? AFL-CIO has the AFT, the teachers and college profs union, as part of it!
We are talking college teachers - Masters & Phds.
What’s this “working” people crap?
..........Sheesh. Greedy, unionized ‘educator’ bass turds. what a bunch of cowards. Surely, we can have COMPETITION in the MOST skilled & educated labor market in the world.
Bunch of whiny, loser Marxists!
The union goonery have spent the members’ billions of contributions for healthcare and retirement as campaign contributions to elect democrats. So, the fascist federal oligarchy democrats are making healthcare no longer a union cost, and retirement will be just another ‘spread the wealth’ program eventually, relieving the union criminals from having to ever be accountable for the billions they’ve wasted on political bastards like obama, et al. All this would be clear to the American voters, if the fifth column enemedia were doing the job of the foruth estate they were meant to be. ... And still no one seems able to build a proper guillotine.
Who would public unions TAX, if there were no productive “capitalists” hard working private sector people) to sponge off of?
They need to re-think this socialism thing.
Bad for their wallets, to ‘kill’ off the economic hosts they steal from.
Yep, It was a most delicious evening.
We must remember why that event took place. Dick Armey and a few other Republicans came up with the Contract With America where they took key points out of the Republican Party Platform and promised the people that if they voted them into office they would try to get as many of the points signed into law.
And dagnabit, they accomplished most if not all of what they said they'd do.
And, the Loony Left called it "The Contract ON America."
