Responding to customers' complaints, Publix has stopped distributing a free 2010 calendar that marked Dec. 7 as the start of the Islamic New Year but excluded the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Joyce Kaufman, whose radio talk show on WFTL-AM 850 is broadcast from Miami-Dade to Palm Beach counties, criticized the supermarket chain on her show Wednesday, saying the company failed to include Pearl Harbor in a calendar that it had widely provided at supermarkets in recent weeks.
Kaufman, a Coconut Creek resident, said omitting the Pearl Harbor anniversary would disappoint World War II veterans. She told the Sun Sentinel she also considers some Muslims -- only those who are "radical and want to destroy Western civilization" -- as enemies of the United States.
She urged listeners to call Publix if the calendar offended them. The supermarket company received several complaints, mostly about the Pearl Harbor anniversary missing from the calendar, Publix officials said.

I am a Publix shopper....have been all my life. This has been the biggest slap to the face they could do..period. Publix serves one of the largest military retiree’s in the country...Florida...and this is the thanks they get.
I am still filing a complaint. I don’t care that they have pulled the calendar now. I suggest we all do the same.
Very sad that this happened. When you figure in that U.S. History has been placed on the back burner in favor of world politics and social studies, no wonder this is happening more and more on all things American.
Sorry, but I probably wouldn’t put Pearl Harbor Day on a wall calendar, either.
The majority of AMERICANS don’t care when the Islamic New Year starts. They do, however, care about AMERICAN history.
Long time Publix shopper.
Not only did I file a complaint, I demanded that the fool who put together, and the fool who approved, this calendar be terminated.
I also reminded them that there are plenty of other grocery options in Jacksonville.
Why is it that almost every large retail operation has people in it promoting anti-Americanism and anti-traditionalism?
It's very common to indicate Pearl Harbor Day on calendars.
Very true...two of mine in my house have it listed.
In addition to filing a complaint, why don't you stop shopping there, especially if they are jihadist sympathizers.
Yep. I even have one from a Catholic seminary (the Pontifical College Josephinum, Columbus OH), which has it along with all of the Catholic feast days.
Pearl Harbor used to be on calendars a lot.
However, if you are going to leave it off, it is a major PR error to replace it with a holiday that is a major celebration by the people that caused our NEWEST Pearl Harbor.
My mom can recall everything that happened that Dec 7th, the day that will live in infamy. I understood it better when the towers came down.
pinging you!
George Jenkins is rolling in his grave over this B.S. Winn-Dixie, here I come!
Do you suggest we also forget about 9/11/01? Part of what has shaped us as a country and a people are the bad things that have been done to us. We do not forget that those things happened, nor do we forget our response to them.
I just looked at my extra large Office Depot calendar and they have “Pearl Harbor Rememberance Day(US)” and they also have “First of Muharran” on Dec. 7th.
...The nearest one to me has huge support and appreciation from the senior citizens.
The staff are kind, caring and listen to complaints.
If someone at the corporate level has done this (calendar) they should, of course, deal with the fall-out and complaints (I wasn't aware of the calendar)
But the personal managers at my store, couldn't be nicer and more helpful.....and no doubt, had any imput with the calendar.
Dinah, thanks for the ping on the new thread.
I was very peeved at them. I emailed, spoke to manager of my local store (while giving back the cussed calendar and drawing a small crowd). I asked for a public apology and they gave one...but not a good one. I am still stuck on the excuse the manager gave me about a printer’s error...utter BS.
I expect that they will still get some of my business, but not anywhere near the 100% that they used to get. Actions need to have consequences.
