Mahindra Diesel Trucks on Track for Spring 2010 Release

Today, we have learned that Indian automaker Mahindra is on track to sell the TR-series diesel trucks after completing all federal tests and is set to submit certification paperwork to the government in January. Final federal approval is expected in February; the trucks would then finally go on sale in the spring. It was just last month that we reported that the trucks were under review by the EPA and NHTSA, with final approval expected by Q1 2010.

“As of today, we are projecting that the vehicles will be on sale in the middle of spring, [2010],” said John Perez, CEO of Mahindra’s U.S. distributor Global Vehicles USA, via Web video.

Mahindra Pickup Side Mahindra’s spring release would finally put a diesel-powered light-duty truck into the hands of the U.S. consumer, after much delay. Barring a swift change in plans from Ford, GM, or Chrysler, the Mahindra TR-series would be the only offerings in its segment.

Having been to India I would *never* even *consider* buying an Indian made (or designed) motor vehicle....unless I was to develop some kind of death wish.

here’s hoping Ford’s watching....oughta take them about 5 minutes to get a Ranger diesel rolling....they could call it ‘Rolling Thunder’! it’ll make a great jeep replacement vehicle, too, when they 4-wheel it!

I rode in a Ranger Diesel back in the early 90’s. It was so loud inside the cab you couldn’t even talk. The salesman and I were yelling at each other!........................

heh...one of the benefits of the old diesels was the noise! had to buy a jeep to get the equivalent noise levels. never fall asleep in a jeep or a diesel (except the Jetta TDI—too quiet for my taste)!

The stats look good, and a ton and a 1/3rd cargo capacity is really a nice selling point.

If the price is reasonable, I’d be interested in buying with two prerequisites. Parts must be readily available and repairs must be doable at home with minimal specialty tools to buy.

The more high mileage diesels on the roads, the better.

I used to have one of the John Deere ag tractors mfg in
India. A nice 2005 unit (5103). Absolutely no complaints.

With 73K on the wife’s Explorer, replacement time is coming fast.

While logistics indicate another Explorer, I like diesel power, and I’d be interested in seeing what the SUV version offers.

Parts and repairs are essential, though.

Too, it’s common knowledge that you should never buy a first year product.

But I will look...

I’ll stick with my ‘71 M35A2 and ‘86 M1009 CUCV. The Deuce only gets 8mpg but you don’t have to worry about getting rearended. The CUCV gets close to 20mpg and is also bigger than the average Yugo.

Going Green at our house means we take the DEUCE!

“....oughta take them about 5 minutes to get a Ranger diesel rolling”.

I’ve always wondered why they didn’t do that already. It can’t be that much of a job to find a diesel to fit given the “straight drive” RWD configuration.

I’ll buy one. If Ford, GM, Toyota, Honda, etc., can’t be bothered to sell a small, diesel pickup in the US - screw ‘em. I’m tired of waiting.
