Gabapentin for a back condition has been a life-saver for me, too. I've been on it for years. I formerly couldn't raise myself out of bed in the morning due to pain.

Fortunately, I've never experienced any side effects at all from the drug. I didn't know about the weaning part, though. My doctors have never mentioned it, even the now-deceased one that prescribed it long ago.

I learn SO many valuable things from FR.

Hi Friend, Thanks for giving me another smile this morning. My first smile was when I got the great news that Rush is going to be OK!

Thank God all our prayers were answered!

Radar on Line is a tabloid website, but it gave good coverage of the Tiger Woods story.

Right now peole are attacking Rush in their comments following the article about Rush being hospitalized.

Please feel free to add your comments:

That does not surprise me, though I’m sorry you have the side effect.

Gabapentin and drugs of the same type are used to treat Parkinson’s Disease, seizure disorders and other conditions caused by nerve damage or ailments related to neural function.

For me, Gabapentin has been very helpful with few side effects.

I have severe nerve damage that manifests symptoms in my right leg and specifically right foot. Most of the time I have no feeling from the knee down, a times I can not move my foot or toes at all. The worst are the day where I have wave after wave of sharp, searing, burning, stabbing pain down the right leg beginning just above the knee, laterally, down the calf/shin and moves across the top of my foot, directly to the tip of my big toe.

Gabapentin has helped relieve the pain aspect, and has restored some feeling and motor function. It has also helped with shooting pain I experience from my L-3 vertebrae.

For those who can tolerate the medication, it is one of a many medications that can be used, aside from narcotic pain relievers, to assist in pain management cause by neural distress or damage.

“Perhaps too much weight lost too fast. Hard on the heart.”

I was also wondering if perhaps the rapid weight loss created a problem. Or perhaps his pain control specialist had difficulty getting his pain meds regulated in relation to his weight loss. My prayers continue for Rush and I will welcome hearing his voice during the show today when he calls in. May God contiue to bless Rush and answer all our prayers!

I agree about the Gabapentin - my husband has been on it for almost 4 years due to severe nerve pain (trigeminal neuralgia) He was on a “cocktail” of nerve pain medication. Now - due to successful brain surgery 2 weeks ago - he is weaning off of them. None of the 4 medications he was taking can be stopped cold turkey. It will be almost Feb. before he is totally off the medicine. But it was a life saver for him during those years.... we have much to be grateful for that these medications are available when people suffer from severe pain.

Best Wishes and Prayers for a speedy recovery, Rush - We Love You!!!

You’ve seen with me how pain meds can cause major weight gain and a slight change can drastically add or take off pounds.

I’m sure his Doc is keeping track of his weight loss and adjsting accordingly - however, I also know, losing a large amount of weight, quickly, does change how the body reacts to meds.

I’ve lost close to 50lbs now after getting on Opana and off the “cocktail” I was on before, as I’m losing the weight, I “feel” the meds much more then before. In fact now I’m going back to falling asleep on the sofa for a bit after taking my pain killer. Doc may have to make changes in my dose next month.

Whatever caused this (and I’m no saying it’s drug related at all) i’m positive Rush will receive the best medical care possible and changes will be made i whatever areas they need to be made in.

Prayers for your husband as well!!! I’m so glad to hear the surgery worked for him!!!

I have to admit one reason I’m SO completely against Gov. involvement in health care is selfishness. I know advances in medications, procedures and surgeries to help chronic pain patients and everyone else with health issues will come to a screeching halt if he Gov. gets their greedy hands into the pot.

Do you check your pings? I'm certain that I pinged you to the LONG Rush messagethread long before you asked me for a URL, which was long long long after I retired for the night.

You seemed to have intense difficulty finding the most active thread of the evening.

And you seem to enjoy posting false/unconfirmed information on the most active thread of the evening. Example:

Yes, there’s a much longer LIVE ongoing thread elsewhere. Rush’s condition was upgraded to STABLE according to a local ABC affiliate.

I asked you if you had a link for that "local ABC affiliate" to confirm that "stable" claim and I never heard back from you. Don't you ever check your pings?

I try to check a few pages showing the LATEST POSTS, to see if anything 'big' is being discussed.

Thanks, hennie pennie, who has been on FR since October 21, 2009. I've only been a FReeper since September 13, 2000, but now I've been schooled on how to check LATEST POSTS on Free Republic. Thanks so much for your gracious help.

My prayers for Rush continue...

Neurontin is a non-assimilated synthetic amino acid—that’s it. It has anti-seizure properties which initially were used as joint therapy with a standard anti-seizure medication like Dilantin or carbemazepine. Neurontin as such has class labeling you speak about, because it is usually used in combination with more serious central nervous system agents. By itself, it is one of the safest agents ever developed and grossly misrepresented- it would be ideal for elderly because it is majorly not metabolized by the liver. In Rush’s case, which he has talked about at length on the air, he has a back condition which could be surgically corrected but with very poor chance it would be improved. As with everyone in the country taking pain meds, you have to worry about habituation— because these things work on the brain receptors and can be chemically addicting. I hope he didn’t have a relapse of his abuse- which at a certain dosage would cause heart problems-increased rate, palpitations, rhythm issues, etc.

I am so glad your husband is doing well and hope all the Freepers here who have shared their terrible experiences dealing with severe pain will also be well.

I happen to be one who went through a terrible car accident in 94, suffered a severe neck and back fracture, every rib broken in two places, and broken clavicle. God blessed me with a complete recovery.

It is wonderful that those having to deal with severe pain have medications that can help them. May God bless everyone and I wish you all a healthy and Happy New Year! Jean
